Anyone have a heart murmur???
I went to first med yesterday for a sore throat and she told me that she found a heart murmur.
She said to go to my primary care physician and get an echocardiogram and that it could be nothing, but I'm worried and I'm wondering why no one ever caught this before....

Re: Anyone have a heart murmur???
I have MVP which is Mitral Valve Prolapse.
Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a very common condition, affecting 1 to 2 percent of the population. MVP causes the leaflets of the mitral valve to flop back into the left atrium during the heart's contraction. MVP also causes the tissues of the valve to become abnormal and stretchy, causing the valve to leak. The condition rarely causes symptoms and usually doesn't require treatment.
A murmur is a swishing sound made by blood flowing through a stenotic or leaky valve.
Many children and adults have innocent heart murmurs, which do not indicate disease and require no treatment. Sometimes, mitral valve prolapse requires no treatment, just periodic checkups by your doctor.
The only thing that is really required for treatment is if I go to the dentist and need to have some type of dental surgery I will need to take antibiotics prior to the surgery.

Re: Anyone have a heart murmur???
I have a slight heart murmur - tricuspid valve regurgitation. Its not something that affects me in any way.
harleygirl - my DH designed an implant to treat mitral valve prolapse (obviously for cases much more severe than yours)

I do... they went through all the tests on me and mine is unexplained. I have ended up in the ER a few times with really bad palpitations and pain too. If you have any questions about the tests or anything you can FM me, I have been through it all.

Re: Anyone have a heart murmur???
I have MVP. When I work out really hard I get bad palpitations, but taking deep breaths and slowing down my breathing just puts everything back in check! They noticed it when I was in college playing basketball. I kept feeling dizzy, etc.. I went to the nurse , the doctor, finally a cardiologist, and that's how they discovered it. It doesn't really affect me in my daily routine though...

Julz, thanks so much! Thank you all so much, you've made me feel much better. I'm going to go to my doctor next week and see what he says and I'll let you know what happens!
Edited for spelling...

Not me but my kitty does.
Not to make light of the situation but I hear that it's more common than you would think. I hope you are ok.

Re: Anyone have a heart murmur???
My daughter & I both have one. I just found out about mine. My impression was it's not a big deal but it does make me susceptible to an infection so before going in for dental work I have to take antibiotics.
