Anyone have a masters in Public Administration
Can you maybe lend me some advice?
Its not for me but for one of my best friends that lives in a suburb outside of Rochester.
She is having a lot of trouble finding a job. Bear with me because I dont know much about the field at all. I was just wondering if you had any ideas or resources that I can send her. I figured Id ask since we are in the biggest city in the country we might know a little more than she does up there. She is willing to move anywhere basically.
She is in a real rut right now.....her husbands education is on hold since they dont know where they are moving to and her apt lease is month to month.
Any help you can give would be WONDERFUL!

Re: Anyone have a masters in Public Administration
I don't have a a masters in public administration but both my mom and her uncle have one - but in slightly different areas
By uncle is accountant to bgin with so his on the side of finance and is a president of a long island hospital
By mom is a nuse to begin with and her has more to do with public polciy - she manages a medical group
both did their master's while working and adapted the masters to their field
it is similar to an MBA and can be used in lots of fields - matters more what she focused on and wants to focus on

I don't have one either, but I know that Hunter College has a program that is supposed to be excellent.
I know someone from college with a joint masters in social work and administration, and she ended up getting a really good job with the State of Massachusetts as a budget analyst.
I think it's a degree that's very flexible.

Re: Anyone have a masters in Public Administration
I am thinking the healthcare system, or in education. What were her plans when she went to school for this?

Ahhhh okay well that can explain her problem somewhat.
Her BS is in broadcasting (just like mine) and that obviously got all of us friends NOWHERE!
Thank you for the info!

DH has his Masters in Library Science and is currently working as a library director. He registered for the MPA program through Marist College. Maybe check out their website?
Good luck!

Re: Anyone have a masters in Public Administration
I think the job market where she is currently b l o w s. I have my MBA with a dual concentration in Accounting and Management Information Systems and cannot find a job either. I live outside of Rochester also.
Your friend should try looking in NYC at a not-for-profit. My cousin has his master's in public policy w/ a focus in healthcare (or something like that) and works for a non-profit in NYC.
Good luck to your friend! I know exactly what she is going through!

Re: Anyone have a masters in Public Administration
Just wanted to add: She also might want to try taking "Master" off of her resume and just writing "Second Bachelor's Degree in ..."
Someone told me once that putting a "Master" on a resume can hurt you because the organization will think you want too much $$$.
Good luck!!!
