Anyone have a problem with tongue tie and breast feeding?
I had DS 4 days ago and I planned on EBF. It was going great at first and then all of a sudden I was getting really sore at the nipples. Then they started cracking and bleeding and now scabbing over. I can't handle the pain of putting DS on the breast so I am pumping until I heal. Turns out DS is tongue tied and this is most likely causing my pain. Did anyone experience this? Did the problem solve once getting the tongue tie taken care of? Now I have less milk today than yesterday, is it normal to not get much now? Could it be because of my nipples? Tia!

Re: Anyone have a problem with tongue tie and breast feeding?
First off congrats!!!
As for being tongue tied, one of my twins is. We didnt have a problem on my end, she just nursed inconsistently. I didnt have it taken care of bc the other twin was inconsistent too and I just had to pump in the end.
I would definitely recommend getting in touch with an LC. They are worth their weight in gold!!!! At 11 months pp, im still in touch with mine all the time.

Congrats! if you think he is tongue tied, get it clipped ASAP. It will make a huge difference in his eating. I can recommend Dr. Monte in Mount Sinai (clipped my DS's) and also Dr. Shaer (Peconic Pediatrics) in Riverhead. I have seen them both for different things and they are awesome!

You can successfully BF with a tongue tie, but it's much harder.
We had DC snipped at 2 weeks. She cried for 30 seconds. Made a WORLD of difference. It also is helpful for their speech later in life.

Anyone have a problem with tongue tie and breast feeding?
Thanks ladies! I did see a LC in the hospital which is how we found the tongue tie. She showed me a different way to position DS. He did feed better from it but she said it won't get better until we have the tongue tie clipped so that's what we are going to do. Since then my nipples have gotten worse and I just can't put him to the breast and I am not producing as much milk so I might have to start supplementing if I cant keep up with him. We have an appt with the Ped tomorrow so we'll see what happens.

I didn't breastfeed but DS was tongue tied. Had it snipped by Dr. Glick at Cohen's CHildrens's Hospital. It literally takes 30 seconds. He was great!

Re: Anyone have a problem with tongue tie and breast feeding?
Congrats!!!!! DD was tongue tied and either couldn't nurse or it was super painful for me. We used a nipple shield at first which did wonders. It was easier for her and easier on me. Around 2.5 or 3 months we brought her to the ENT to have it snipped because I could see an indentation in her tongue bc it was so tight. She was able bf like a champ immediately after and it no longer hurt me.
I didn't have it snipped so much for the feeding aspect bc she was able to eat but more because I was afraid of speech issues down the road.
good luck! Feel free to fm me if you have any more questions. congrats again!

Thank you! It doesn't affect him taking a bottle, but it is WAY too painful for me to nurse him. Even pumping hurts because they are so sore! I'm glad to hear that nursing was no longer painful after you got it clipped. I am hoping we can get it taken care of rather quickly and i'll be able to nurse him!

Re: Anyone have a problem with tongue tie and breast feeding?
CONGRATS. DD is slightly tongue tied if that is possible. The LC told us that she was when she came because I was having latching issues and she seemed to be frustrated. I asked the pediatrician about it and at her one month check up she confirmed what the LC said but also told me that she wouldnt suggest clipping. That she did for her own kids and wished she didnt. DD is still EBF unless I cant keep up her demand and it is possible. It does hurt less than it did before but I have learned to change her position and that seems to help. Luckily she is gaining weight and it really hasnt caused that much of an issue. Plus DH does not want to do anything about it either. See what the Pediatrician says Good luck it gets better

Re: Anyone have a problem with tongue tie and breast feeding?
Thanks! The LC said it wasn't severe and he doesn't have a problem eating but it is the reason for my pain. It gets worse as each day goes on. I haven't been able to BF since yesterday morning because I started bleeding and scanning so bad. It hurts just sitting here. I'm hoping to get it clipped an be able to BF because my supply doesn't seem to be able to keep up from pumping :/

Re: Anyone have a problem with tongue tie and breast feeding?
ds was tongue tied - its hereditary in my family.... we got it clipped - otherwise it most likely will affect speech ( which was the case for me my sister and her 2 kids).
Its a simple proceedure, they use ambisol .(sp?) and the dr told us the earlier the better cause it will get thicker.

Not me. But, I was talking to someone the other day who had this issue. Totally resolved when she has him clipped. Producing milk like crazy now.

So she had an issue producing milk too? Thanks! We are definitely going to get it clipped.
