Anyone have a toddler who has trouble with activity transitions?
We just had Jack evaluated for his stuttering and the social worker also mentioned that he seems to have trouble transitioning acitivites, hence all the meltdowns everyday. How do you handle it?
They have a great program here in OH that the state provides free in-home speech and occupational therapy for kids age birth-3 who qualify and Jack shows a need with his speech so we are eligible for free inhome speech pathology services.
Anyway, as a part of the speech evaluation they also mentioned the trouble with transitioning. Anyone else have this issue with their DC?

What exactly do they mean by transitioning activities?
Like if you tell him it's bath time or bed time and he has a tantrum?

Exactly. Nothing about our day is smooth with Jack. Everything is like the end of the world

I've had trouble transitioning them from one activity to the next if that's what you mean.
Usually I give a few minute warning, followed by one minute, & a countdown.

I set a timer, either on the microwave or stove, or you can even buy an egg timer, and when its time to move onto something else, like bath, or bed, or even sitting down to dinner, I tell Andrew he has 10 minutes to finish up and I set the timer. I tell him when he hears the timer beeping, he needs to do the next thing. It usually works.

Thanks! Now that I think of it, my friend did that with her son when he was 2 and she swore by it. I'll definately try it out.
Funny...this is the exact topic on "Surviving Motherhood" right now on TLC.

Re: Anyone have a toddler who has trouble with activity transitions?
Isn't that the norm for kids?
What I have learned is that if he has something to look forward to in the next activity it helps.
For example, earlier in the week he didn't want to stop playing to go brush his teeth (because he knows it's right to bed after that). So I grabbed Elmo and said "Well, Elmo's going to brush his teeth with or without you."
I was in the bathroom telling Elmo what great little tooth-brushing muppet he was for less than two seconds before Jake came running in to brush his teeth.
The next night, I didn't even have to bring Elmo, he went to brush his teeth as soon as I asked (believe me even I was impressed!).
Another transition he'll fight me on is if we are playing outside and it's time to go inside. Rather than saying "it's time to go inside" I say, "Let's go play with the Aquadoodle! [or any toy]" And it makes for a smoother transition.
The timer thing hasn't worked for me - but in all fairness I only tried it twice. He looked at me like I had 6 heads.

No real advice, but I just wanted to offer
We live in Chicago and just got approved for free inhome speech therapy for Nate. He started his first session yesterday. Hopefully it will help him talk more.

Re: Anyone have a toddler who has trouble with activity transitions?
Bryan has extreme meltdowns when going inside from outside. He loves the outdoors. We usually have to tell him that Reggie ( our dog) is going inside and he wants to play with you. It helps a little but not that much. WE are still working on this- it gets very embarrasing at parks. Also bathtime was a biggie until we got those bath crayons and now we just tell him that its time to color in the bath and he loves it- he has even been asking us to go.

Sounds like our boys would get along great! They are living the same life.
