Anyone have an "older" dog and scared to think about them leaving?
I have 2 dogs, 6 and 3. I have a huge connection to the 6 yr old. I can't believe he's 6 already! My DH and i got him when we first moved in together and I swear this dog has a human soul. He is so sweet and smart. I get so upset to think about him not being around. Anyone else?

I used to think about it with Ebony -- but I didn't really think he would leave me... he was in such great shape at 11, it didn't even cross my mind that it would happen so soon ...
Love your pup every day....

Re: Anyone have an "older" dog and scared to think about them leaving?
I just have a fear that my dog will get into some sort of accident.
We are so careful but if he got out to chase a cat, he may not pay attention to an oncoming car. He has run out and then come back when I called but I am so afraid that I often leash him when I am answering the door or saying goodbye to guests at my door. Better safe than sorry, even though I think I have taught him well to listen.

my boogie is almost two and I have already thought about this- it is so sad- my Poodle growing up died at 9 years old... I hate thinking of the possibility of only having a few years left with my little guy!

Well Casey is only 3 but I do the same thing
I remember when my dog Pepper who I had growing up was getting older, one time I just had the realization she would not always be with me and I must have hugged her for a good 10 minutes...plus I cut off a lock of her hair (she was a curly poodle) and I kept it but sadly I lost it when I moved out...I told my mom I wished I still had it bc I would have her cloned

This dog(Caden) was hit by a dog when someone was watching him for us We were away and their gate was broken. They called and told us and we insisted he go to the emergency vet. $1,000 later-he was bruised. he limped around for a couple of days but then was fine. He also broke his leg falling down stairs in my old apartment. This poor guy!
Stay is the BEST thing you can teach your dogs!
ETA hit by a car, not a dog

Re: Anyone have an "older" dog and scared to think about them leaving?
My Lucy is almost 13. Just today, my husband and I were talking about how quickly she has gotten to this age. You can see it in her face and she has begun to thin out. She still is in good health and runs around like a young dog with my other two. It seems like I always had her with me. I know she, probably, only has a few years to go. It's just hard to think about it and how lonely this house will be without her.

Re: Anyone have an "older" dog and scared to think about them leaving?
I have had Mia for two years and cannot imagine my life without her. She is just the most amazing dog. I cry every time I think about how short her life will be. 12-15 years is just not enough. I want her with me forever.

Re: Anyone have an "older" dog and scared to think about them leaving?
Our dogs are still young and thinking about this brings me to tears. Denver, Holden, and now Bella mean so much to us, I cannot imagine life w/o them. I do my best to appreciate every minute with them, even when they make me crazy

Re: Anyone have an "older" dog and scared to think about them leaving?
this is the most upsetting thing to me
we adpoted our cat thinking he was 2 or 3- it turns out he is 7
I can't believe the girl lied to us like that- and then told us after
this is my first pet- and it's going to hit me hard- he is like my child- after 3 months of having him

Re: Anyone have an "older" dog and scared to think about them leaving?
That is so weird that you posted this because just this morning as I was laying in bed with Molly I was thinking how I wish she could stay with us forever.
She is only one - but the thought crosses my mind all the time. It was much easier before I liked dogs because I never had to worry about it. Now, I can't imagine life without her.

Re: Anyone have an "older" dog and scared to think about them leaving?
I had to put my best friend down a bit over a year ago. For years before that I'd think about him not being around and I couldn't fathom it. I would forget he was a dog all the time. He was such a little man to me and knew me so well. When he past I told my DH that I bet I will never have another dog like that that went beyond being a good dog and was my best friend. He always knew how I felt and would make me feel better if I needed that. I miss him so much, but the memories are terrific and am so much richer for having had him for those 10 years.

Re: Anyone have an "older" dog and scared to think about them leaving?
My dog just passed away on Saturday & I can honestly say that no matter how much I "knew" his time would come, I didn't want to think about it. Now that he is gone, I have a huge void in my life. Coming home & not hearing the bark or getting the welcome, it all feels so strange. We had him since he was 8 weeks old, so for 11 years of my life, he was there. I know in time it will get easier!
One piece of advice, cherish the moments you have now with them!

Re: Anyone have an "older" dog and scared to think about them leaving?
I just lost my maltese of 15 years to heart disease. I cried many times the last few years of her life thinking of losing her. Then unfortunately it became reality. I was not prepared in any way for the pain I was going to go through losing her. She was my best friend, my everything, that once in a lifetime dog. It is four months since I lost her and I still cry everyday.

Re: Anyone have an "older" dog and scared to think about them leaving?
I thought about this when I first got my Maximus. I love him more than I can ever explain. Funny you bring this up because I had a bad dream last night about me having to give him up him up at his current age but I got him back as a puppy but I wanted him back the way he is now. I woke up crying. (Yes, ladies I think I am starting to crack up LoL) Even tho this was only a dream I still get upset thinking about it.
