anyone have any experience with kidney stones?
After a night of a lot of pain, DH finally went to the ER at 4am in the snow. It turns out he has a few small stones and one 5mm. Apparently the small ones will pass without a problem, but the Dr. is slightly concerned that Dh "may" not pass. Anyone or their DH's go through this? How long will he be in all of this pain? And how long do they usually take to pass? I have to make an appointment for him to see the uroligist tomorrow, but they're on break for lunch right now.

Re: anyone have any experience with kidney stones?
Ouch. I've had them, my mom, and my FIL. My mom was barely in any pain. My FIL was in a ton of pain. I was only in pain when they were actually moving and the pain was unbearable.
Every person is different. My mom was able to do the blasting surgery. I had to have them go in through my hooha and retrieve them. FIL is waiting his out to see what happens next (he just had them for the first time a week before Thanskgiving) because he refuses to have a lazer pointed at his stuff.

Re: anyone have any experience with kidney stones?
Dh had them the night I gave birth! He wound up in the ER 12 hours after DS was born.
He was able to pass them. He had a blockage and he only had pain when it was in the tube from the kidney to the bladder.
My dad had to have it retreived (ouch!) but they numb you - it's more embarrasing than anything else really.
I would suggest your DH takes care of it before it gets stuck and there is a blockage. It is extremely painful and can be dangerous if you stop urinating.

Re: anyone have any experience with kidney stones?
Well th uroligist's office was either closed because of the snow or their phone lines were down. I called all day and never got a person. I will call first think in the am and see if I can get DH in tomorrow. He's still in a lot of pain and I'm worried I may have to take him back to the ER at some point tonight. The Dr. gave him the strongest oxycodone and they're still not cutting it.

Re: anyone have any experience with kidney stones?
I had one 2 months after having Emma. It was the most unbearable pain in the world. I would have rather gone thru labor again than have the pain of a kidney stone. Mine was 4mm and I passed it. It only causes the pain when it is moving. Maybe that is a good sign that it is trying to pass on its own. I remember the doctors giving me drugs and I asked for more because it wasn't cutting it. I spent days in a fog because it hurt so bad. I hope it comes out on its own!

If he stops urinating, take him to the ER ASAP. If that happens then he'll be in so much pain anyway though, you will have no choice but to go.
Good Luck --- They are very painful (but extremely treatable)

Re: anyone have any experience with kidney stones?
Ohhhhh... I have had them, but for men they are much worse.
DH's friends father has them BAD, multiple surgeries and all, and he must drink lemonade with a lot lemon juice to help keep them away. The citric acid helps to break them down and prevent them if I recall.
I hope he feels better and they go away soon!!

Re: anyone have any experience with kidney stones?
My DH had them a few years ago.
They gave him an IV for fluids & valium in the hispotal & then hydrocodone to take home, I think.
He went to a urologist the next day, who gave him codine for when the hydrocodone ran out, but it wasn't as good.
He pretty much slept for 4 days. It was a Sunday night/monday morning & he passed them Friday morning. As soon as that happened he was fine--went to the dr, and then went to work.
He hasn't had a recurrance.
The worst pain was in the beginning, like someone said above, when it was moving into the bladder (and he didn't have the drugs yet.)
Did you get an appt? I can see if DH remembers the name of his dr, if you need someone else. The office is near the White Plains hospital.

That's the urology place we went to. They even sent us over to the hospital for addtional xrays. Turns out the Dr thinks the stones are 3mm, not 5mm like the catscan tech thought. That works out to be both good and bad. If it was bigger they would zap it to break it up. Since it was 3mm, they want to let him pass it on his own. The pain has been a lot better today, but he's feeling it again tonight. I just posted on TTC about this, but my big concenr now is that the Dr. put him on Flomax, which can have a huge negative impact on fertility, and after we've been TTc for 6 months, that's not exactly the best news.

Re: anyone have any experience with kidney stones?
Worst pain EVER. I also threw up (then dry heaved) whenever I moved. Mine started Fri evening, by Sat afternoon I couldn't stand it and drove myself to the ER (yeah that wasn't pleasant, thankfully it was really close). Mine were all able to pass, and they did on Sunday.
