Anyone Have experience with online classes? Web designers/programmers, especially, please come in!!

Long story as short as possible, I'm transitioning to a new position at my company and I need to take an intro to JavaScript class. I work FT and my hours are wacky depending on our workload so taking a structured course where the days and times are firmly scheduled just won't work for me. I wanted to look into online classes since I think that's my best bet but I don't know really what I'm looking for.

I'm not going for another college degree but this also isn't something I'm doing "for fun".

I notice some colleges (like Dowling) offer "continuing education" classes online through some third party place but I can't seem to find any reviews of the company that conducts the courses. I don't think University of Phoenix or Kaplan are really what I want either. Has anyone heard of O'Reilly School of Technology? They were first in my Google search. I'm so worried I'll wind up enrolling in something that's a waste of time. So, how do I know what to look for in a course offering?

Any thoughts/comments/feedback are more than welcome!

Thanks in advance!!

for programming online really is a nice away to go. the programmer who sits next to me is getting her masters and its strictly online only. If you want to just test and do not wish to have an actual credit class, I would def. look into continual education but something less expensive than Dowling. Perhaps a community college or state since private is just so much money.

Thanks so much for the response. I'm so happy to hear that. It makes me feel so much better! I think the class at Dowling was only $300 through their continuing education program and my company would be picking up the cost since it's work-related. I was just worried since I knew nothing about the company that actually conducts the class. Ideally I'd love to have some sort of certification (it doesn't have to be another degree since I don't think the company would pick that up in its entirety) when I'm done should I ever leave here. O'Reilly seems to have that but they're a lot more than the Dowling one. I'm open to exploring other places too...I just don't know how to look for them. Googling for this kind of info just doesn't seem to return too many decent results. That's why I figured if someone had a recommendation of a college or school to look into, I might make better progress. Chat Icon
