Anyone have information about volunteering opportunities?
I am finally finishing school this may for my RN. I have been wanting to volunteer, but was unable to between, my full time job, family, and school. However, I want to set a good example for my son, and do some good in the community.
I would like to volunteer for something that would also look good on my resume when I do eventually look for a nursing job. I have volunteered with animal shelters and dog rescue groups in the past, but think I need to move to the human world. My time is limited, but I could do a few hours a week, starting this June.
Do you have suggestions of organizations, that are looking for volunteers, that would take me with my limited time availability. I was thinking a domestic violence and rape crisis organization would be great. But I really love children, and would love to do some work with organizations that benefit them. I just don't know where to start.
Any suggestions appreciated.

My friend works for Girl Scouts of Nassau County and she is looking for women to talk to girls about critical issues.
Critical Issues Presenter
They will train you until you are comfortable to do it on your own.

I was going to suggest the fire department/ambulance corps in your community. You may not have time to take an EMT class, and ride on the ambulance but many of the organizations have auxiliary members.

Hi LuAnn
Have you thought about Meals on Wheels? I do an event for them every year. It is amazing what this organization does for seniors. For some people it is their only human interaction all day Not only do they provide hot, nutritous meals, they provide human contact for lonely people.
Also, how about the Ronald McDonald House? Another amazing organization. I cry through every one of the events I have done for them.

Sweettoth, the EMT idea is great, I just know it is tightknit, and I would be so worried about being accepted into the fold.
HI Melissa!!
I LOVE RMH! They were there for me when I needed them, and i stayed at their place by Schneiders when Parker was there. I did look on their site for an opportunity, but could not find anything they would need me for. Maybe I should just call and ask... I OWE them!

I would check out the Make a Wish Foundation website. They have a location in Ronkonkoma. A friend of mine was looking into volunteering with them.

Thank You all for your suggestions and PM's. You have informed me of some opportunities, that I did not know existed. I hope I can find the right fit.
I am so excited about this!

There's also the Long Island Crisis Center in Bellmore. I live in N. Bellmore, so I've been toying with the idea of volunteering with them.
And the Coalition Against Domestic Violence in Bethpage is another one I've looked into.

Try Long Island Head Start. They are an organization that helps children from low income families. They have centers all over suffolk county.
