Anyone have/know about petunias and marigolds?
We always do impatients, but this year we wanted something different; I did marigolds around my front tree, white petunias in the front, and violent ones in the back. THEN my mom tells me that her petunias get yucky and don't last and that I planted too early and should have stuck with impatients! LOL!

I did petunias one year and the thing that really annoyed me was that you have to remove all of the yucky flowers so the new ones can grow. It wound up being very time consuming (we had a few window boxes of them). They also grew fairly high which I didn't like (whereas impatiens stay closer to the ground) I vowed never to get them again.

Uh...high flowers are not my thing; they look wild! Oh, well...I'm not pulling them out and starting over. My back is aching!

Re: Anyone have/know about petunias and marigolds?
I've done petunias and never had a real problem. Although, I don't remember them lasting through the whole summer. I think when it gets really hot they stop flowering, but I'm not sure.
I don't like marigolds at all, they smell like urine to me.

We actually plant marigolds in the vegetable garden because their smell keeps the critters away.

I don't know too much about planting, but rabbits loooove petunias. (We have lots of rabbits in our area, I don't know about you.) But marigolds are supposed to keep some kind of bug away, but is good for your gardening.

Marigolds like full sun and the ones that smell repell mosquitoes.

me too- i put petunias all along my back wall- i live on the water and it's pretty much all that will grow back there- they've overflown onto the wall and look beautiful but i've never seen them get high. Also, I've never once cut back the dead flowers and they're flowered all summer...

Re: Anyone have/know about petunias and marigolds?
Im a gardener. Your pretunias get yucky if u do not deadhead them. You didnt plant too early. Any flower that is outside right now at a flower place and not in a greenhouse is safe to plant. Marigolds repel insects so they are great for veggie gardeners, def the way to go is the wave petunia though...they cascade. Planting anything white is awesome because u can see it at night... try moonflowers one day..they are awesome!!!!!!!!!
another easy flower that is sooooooo pretty and self-seeds---four o'clocks...the variety is called broken colors./

Re: Anyone have/know about petunias and marigolds?
my parents have owned a garden center for 20 years and i grew up working for them.... you definitely did not plant too early. my parents always tell people that mother's day your safe to plant everything outside and petunias will get kind of yucky if you don't dead head them ( cut dead flowers off)... the wave petunias will stay lower to ground. something to think about for next year if you think regular petunias get too high this year. marigolds are great and hardy. also... did you plant the petunias and marigolds in the same spot that you usually plant impatiens? because impatiens are do better in the shade while petunias and marigolds are more for sun. so just be careful with that.
