Anyone have more than one dog?

Our boxer, Madison, is a year old. My husband desperately wants another boxer for Maddie, I'm on the fence. If you have more than one dog, can you give me pros and cons? Ever regret getting another? Thx!Chat Icon

Re: Anyone have more than one dog?

We have two. My first dog was abused and had tons of anxiety. We got a second one 1. To help him and 2. Because we do not have children. I love that Rocky has Adrian. We love them both so! The only negative that we have had is cost and DH and I gave up eating/ going out when money was tight so that helped.

Good luck!

Re: Anyone have more than one dog?

We had one boxer, Apollo (will be 2 in December) and we just got another, Luna (she just turned one in October). I was nervous at first, but it's been great. We didn't want to get a puppy. We wanted a another boxer under the age of 2. It's like Apollo and Luna were meant to be lol. They are best of friends. It's so cute. They do everything together. Yes it's more work, in the sense that it's more cleaning, but not horrible. I'm always sweeping, vacuuming anyway. They are also wrecking the backyard grass because they play hard. But we'll fix it. I don't regret adding another. She's been with us for two weeks and we are all already in love with her Chat Icon She's great with my boys too. So gentle, just like Apollo. Chat Icon I LOVE boxers!

Anyone have more than one dog?

I have two mini English bulldogs they are half brothers, same Dad and they are night and day As far as personalities go. My first y is four and my little guy is two. I like that they have each other, they do fit sometimes but for the most part both are big couch potatoes. It's more work at first it felt like we went from one to ten dogs but I never regret getting the little guy. I wish you the best:)

Re: Anyone have more than one dog?

I've had two dogs for 12+ years... First had my Max and Vessa ... when they passed we got Delilah and Sam (My guys are now curently 5 and 4 years old)..

The only bad thing I will say about having the two - (and this is completely DH and my fault)... is that once we got Sam.. we never did anything separate with them - they were always together. So now Sam freaks out if he's out of sight from Lilah...Total freak out like you think he's being tourtured. Makes going to the goomers and the vet a bit of a challenge. I know for any future furbabies..I will make sure to do things separately with them so that they're comfortable letting the other go into the vet room with out making a mess on the floor!

Other than that - I love having the two... they're company for each other and you can tell how much they love having each other around!

We have 3.
A chihuahua who likes to be left alone for the most part.
A schnauzer terrior mix that always wanted to play with the chihuahua but all she did was bark at the poor guy.
So we got him a playmate. A poodle/shih tzu mix and it was the best thing we ever did. They both keep each other active. And as you can see they get along:

Re: Anyone have more than one dog?

We have two dogs. We didn't INTEND to have two dogs, but such is life. Chat Icon We adopted our older dog from North Shore a few years ago. He was a tough puppy, but once he hit 2 years, he turned into a saint. I seriously don't know what happened and I'm not questioning it! Chat Icon My mom found our boxer/pitt mix tied to a tree in Forest Park. My mom got food and water for her and waited to see if anyone came to claim her. No one ever did. So she called me and said I have a dog I think you'll like. As soon as we met her, DH and I both fell in love with her. Is it tough? Sure. Is it more work than with one dog? Absolutely, but not much more. Our pit mix is now older, too, so she's not as much of a handful. (She was about a year when we found her so she was still a wild child.) We're already going for walks, buying food, asking family members to watch them and the house while we're away, so it's just a matter of doubling it. I think we feel the most strain in cost. Twice the food, toys, vet bills, etc. Is it worth it? A thousand times yes. They really do love each other and they seem less lonely, less needy now that they have a playmate. The only thing I would recommend is looking into an older dog- already trained, fixed, etc. rather than a puppy. I think that might make it an easier transition.

Re: Anyone have more than one dog?

I have 2. I got my 2nd when my male was just about a year old. For us, it was the best decision. I dont feel as guilty when I leave the house and also they absolutely keep each other company. Also they chase eachother which is great for exercise, since they are a high energy breed that needs alot of activity. Only con, yes, more work of course. 2 vet bills, 2 groomer bills, and it takes more effort to take 2 dogs for check ups, etc. Also if you walk your dog it is much harder to walk 2 dogs at once than one alone. Thats why I wont get a third, when I would love to. It would make all these things practically impossible to do at the same time. NO regrets though. We were sure and it was a great decision.

Re: Anyone have more than one dog?

We have 2. Our first dog Sandy was (still is) very scared of everything so we got Toby as a buddy for her. They loved each other, sadly Toby passed away after a few short years. Sandy was sooo sad so several months later we got Trixie who does not get along with Sandy at all. The vet bills are the biggest difference. Toby got cushings disease so it was expensive to test for & to treat. Trixie had to have teeth pulled & surgery when we got her. Our vet wanted $1K for all of that but thankfully the rescue group we got her from where able to cover the expense. So long story short we love having 2 dogs but the vet bills can be alot.

My DH thinks i'm crazy but I would like a 3rd dog.

Oh one more thing we do not board our dogs espically Sandy so finding someone to watch them when we go away is a pain in the you know what.

I forgot to add this too. We won't use a boarding facility so we have to find a family member to watch them. Much tougher with 2 dogs than with one dog. That's why I can't get a third. I could never get anyone who could handle 3. Two is hard enough!

Re: Anyone have more than one dog?

We have 2 dogs. They are best buds.

I couldn't imagine just having 1 now. Like PP have said, I feel less guilty when leaving them for a long period of time because they have each other. They run and play together all the time. They lay on the same bed. Such total cuteness.

I think it's good for a dog to have a playmate all the time.

Yes, it's a little harder at first... but it's worth it.
