Anyone have to have a colposcopy while pregnant? UPDATE...had it today
I had my check up today and I mentioned that I've been having LOTS of discharge, so they did a quick look.
Doctor said my cervix is slightly inverted and asked if I had any irregular paps.
I said yes, because I've had lots of irregulars in my past and had several colposcopies and I had cervical bleeding around 14 weeks.
So he said he wants to do a colposcopy at my next visit on the 28th just to be sure.
I've been through the procedure in the past and NOT liked it. I was wondering if they do it differently in pregnancy or if it's exactly the same.
UPDATE
Well, I had the colposcopy this morning at the OB.
I asked him right before if they would take anything or it was just a visual exam and he said if he saw something abnormal, he would have to take a piece so we knew what we were dealing with.
About 2-3 minutes into the exam he told me he saw something so he had to take a sample.
Can I just say OUCH!!!
If I ever thought I could go through labor without an epi, I think I proved myself wrong today.
I was in such pain I almost passed out and the baby started kicking up a storm and I was bleeding badly so he had to get a LARGER speculum to see better and swab out the blood.
It was no fun. Now I'm on modified rest the next 3 days and I'm supposed to be taking care of DH.
Plus, I'm totally freaked that he needed to take a piece out and it will be 2 weeks before they have results.
Ugh.

I think they try to be a lot more careful during pregnancy.

what is a colposcopy?
They check your cervix with a microsope attached to a light. Usually to check abnormal cells but also for other reasons. It's a better visual than just eye check. It is sometimes followed by a biopsy.

Re: Anyone have to have a colposcopy while pregnant?
No, never when PG. And I had a bad pap when I was PG ( last Pregnancy) and they didnt do one.
I would just ask what if any the risks of cervical incompetence is after a procedure like that. As long as the risk is 0 , then I'm sure you will be ok.
I was actually told abnormal paps might not mean anything during pregnancy...which is why , we waited on mine I believe.
I would ask the Dr. What the point even is, since you are PG, that it cant wait till after delivery. Just so you dont have to go through it unless neccesary.
Im sure its just a precaution ultimately.
And Im sorry Lauren if you do have to have it done.
The cervix should be very THICK due to the Pregnancy and it actually should hurt a lot less because of that , if thats any consolation.

Re: Anyone have to have a colposcopy while pregnant?
They usually take a small sample of cells to test for cancer. It sucks.
Lauren I have had a few in the past but none while pg, so I can't answer that for you. Last time I went for one, they couldn't see any abnormal cells so they didn't take anything.

Re: Anyone have to have a colposcopy while pregnant?
Thanks girls.
That's just the thing, I haven't had an abnormal pap in almost two years.
I think he just wants a closer look. I didn't realize that the colp could be done without the biopsy part.
I've always had the biopsy with it. So it's good to know that they can just look.

I had one done because of an irregular pap smear It was done exactly the same way I have had them done in the past. The vinegar solution put on the cervix to see the "infected" parts. If they want to go further, they'll take a biopsy of whatever part turned white. They WILL NOT do any other procedure until after you deliver. At least that's what my doctor said. Thankfully when I had the colposcopy, nothing was wrong. So we're just repeating a pap smear at 28 weeks.

Re: Anyone have to have a colposcopy while pregnant?
I go through this a few times due to having cervical displasia. My doc hasnt mentioned if he will do it this time around. If you have any fears ask your doc if there are any risks involved. I think your cervix is really thinck anyways at thsi point so you may feel a lil pinch and thats it.

Re: Anyone have to have a colposcopy while pregnant?
Thanks. I feel a little better.
I just hated them SO much before and used to have to have DH drive me home after them.
But they were always taking a little piece so I guess it will be less painful without that.
