Anyone here with a ranch (and/or with the garage in the basement)? (parenting related)
I have a few questions for you regarding this and kids/babies.
If you have a ranch, did you still babyproof your bedroom even?
If your garage is in the "basement" is that a real PIA regarding getting kids in the car?
Looking at a house and thinking ahead, that's all.

I have a ranch and it's built into a hill so part of the basement is a walk out and it above ground.
No, it really isn't that much more difficult to get the kids in and out. I usually come up through the garage and the door opens to a nice size butler area. The kids can walk up by themselves now with a little help from me.
As far as baby proofing...no, I didn't baby proof my bedroom or theirs even. The electrical outlets are covered and the furniture that is climbable is bolted to studs but that is it. The bedrooms are kind of in a separate part of the house...kind of like a different wing.

I have a ranch. The basement and the garage are under the house - the basement has no outside entrance.
However, there are two low stairs leading up to the bathrooms and bedrooms.
We haven't babyproofed anything except for covering the wall sockets. We may change our minds when DD arrives.
We have not had any trouble getting DS into the car - but we do it from the front door, since we use the garage for storage and park in the driveway. We don't have many steps so it's been easy so far.
If we had the car in the garage it would actually be MORE annoying since the way the house is set up, you'd have to go down the stairs, through the basement and into the garage. So much easier to go out the front door for us.
I will say that having an 18 month old and being pregnant, I love love love living in a ranch and I know I'll love it when DD arrives too. I never realized how many times I climbed the stairs each day before!

Where do you unpack your groceries? How do you manage with DC and packages, etc? Do you run DC into the house then unload it all in the driveway and walk through the front of the house?

Re: Anyone here with a ranch (and/or with the garage in the basement)? (parenting related)
We have a raised ranch with the garage in the basement. DD is 8 months old so we are just beginning to baby-proof our home.
If you have a ranch, did you still babyproof your bedroom even? We have a couple of outlets that I plan to put the covers over. We also have a 1/2 bath that will need to be baby-proofed (toilet lock maybe, locks on the two cabinets in the vanity.
If your garage is in the "basement" is that a real PIA regarding getting kids in the car?
I actually really like having our garage in the basement. We currently have DD in her infant seat and we typically leave her carseat in the finished basement and carry her upstairs. I like that the carseat is not sitting in the middle of my kitchen and that I don't have to carry her down the stairs in her carseat. It's wonderful in any kind of bad weather. I also have a friend who leaves the infant seat in her car in the garage instead of bothering to remove it from the car.
HTH! Happy house hunting!!

Where and how do you unload groceries? And is the garage below the kitchen or other side of the house? Do you bring everything up through the basement? How difficult do you think it will be when your DD is walking or larger/heavier, going through the basement?

I typically unload groceries through the garage and up the stairs. 99% of the time DD is sleeping so I leave her locked in the car, bring up the groceries, and then bring her in. Sometimes I will bring her in first then bring up the groceries.
I actually never really thought about once she is walking or bigger...I don't foresee having any difficulty.
In the morning, DH throws her daycare stuff in to my car and he leaves for work. Then I get myself ready and bring DD down and put her in the carseat, set the house alarm, and then put her in the car. I am kind of a nut so I don't open the garage door until DD is in and I am in with the doors locked. (not that we live in a bad area or anything)
ETA: when you are facing the house, the garage is on the bottom right side. Our kitchen is up the stairs in the center of the house to rear left of the house.

Ok. The house I am looking it seems like it might be like this...that you have to walk across the entire basement to get to the stairs into the house, which seems odd IMO.
Where do you unpack your groceries? How do you manage with DC and packages, etc? Do you run DC into the house then unload it all in the driveway and walk through the front of the house?
So even though your garages are in the "basement", do you still feel like you gain the benefits of a true ranch re dealing with the kids, dealing with packages, etc? I just wish the garage was level with the entire house but oh well, you can't have it all.
I have sort of a similar setup to what you're talking about. I have a cape type house but we don't use the upstairs(only for guests) I have a spearate garage that we only use for storage. When I go shopping. I bring Declan in first-because Ronan freaks if I walk out teh door and he's in the house. I put D in my babyproofed LR. Then I go back out and get Ronan and put him in there. Then I walk out the side door to get my packages so they don't see me leave.
