Have you ever considered direct sales? I just recently started selling Initials, Inc. products for fun, and I've made over $1000 since Aug. 1!

I have been selling Avon for years...it is what you make of it.

I have also been babysitting for a couple of years - gas money for the week...Chat Icon

And I have a card design business...also a little extra money.

It is hard to find legit things out there.
It really is who you know.

I have been looking for something for years that is more consistent, haven't found a thing Chat Icon

I sell Scentsy. I signed up because I love the products, not because I NEEDED the money. But I love selling it. After doing it for just a few months, I've been averaging a commission of over $550 monthly. I will be promoting again this month so future months will be even more! Chat Icon

Re: Anyone Hiring/or work at home jobs

Seeing a client face to face aside, I could do the majority of my job at home if I wanted (I write extensive service/treatment plans for clients).

However, there's no way in HELL I would get any work done at home if DS/DH were there. I even have a hard time getting work done if they are not because I'm less comitted to it in a non-work environment.

I don't think that was your question though. Chat Icon

But I agree to try to find something that involves writing.

Check out mediabistro.com
You will see some legal companies hiring writers with legal experience to write press releases, blogs, ect.
I'd also contact any and all legal service companies in your area with a proposal that you can write articles for them and maybe charge x amount a piece.

Sometimes you gotta think outside the box and offer your talent even if they aren't necessarily looking.

Freelance writing is very broad, with lots of specialties. If it's something you want to do, you need to narrow your focus.

You can start working pretty quickly with content mills like Textbroker- you don't need any published clips, though the pay is lousy. But it's a low-risk way to see if you enjoy it, and you can begin your portfolio.

It can be overwhelming- I started with resumes because it was pretty cut-and-dried- I took an excellent course and read a lot on my own. I'd actually recommend it as a way to get started if you're interested in business-related writing, which is more lucrative than most other kinds.

I think this is great advice, but I think the pay depends upon several factors. I do some of my work through Textbroker, and if you have a high ranking, you receive higher pay. As you build yourself up on this site, you'll also be able to receive direct orders and team orders. These can pay a bit more, and it creates a steady stream of work in a field you like.

If you don't mind asking, where do you work? I've been on the look out for stay at home jobs.

Re: Anyone Hiring/or work at home jobs

I work from home for my company (the same as JenniferEver), but it's not a substitute for child care, so not sure how many would really be interested. We all still have full time child care, because it's quite structured still.

Interested in selling Chocolate? I just signed on as a Dove Chocolate Discoveries Chocolatier. After one party, I made enough to pay for my daughters dance class for the year. But like Marcie said, it is what you make of it.

ITA. DH works from home as an editor and there is NO way he could take care of a child while working. Legit work from home jobs are just that- jobs.

I agree with this as well. I don't have children, but my cats are enough of a distraction! Even just the phone ringing, the temptation to cook, do laundry, etc. is distracting.

If I had kids, I'd def have to have daycare/babysitting in place while I worked.

Re: Anyone Hiring/or work at home jobs

I work in educational publishing from home. I mostly do writing for assessment. It is exhausting. I can work whatever hours I want, as long as I meet deadlines, so I mostly work weekends and nights. I never get a break. But it is legit. I have found that freelancing is either feast or famine. I either have so much work that I don't have time to breathe, or I have little to no work. If you work for a company that requires you to work certain hours, or be on the phone, you'll need to have childcare. I don't have any childcare besides my husband on the weekends, lol.
I meet all my deadlines by sometimes working until 3am and then getting up with the kids in the morning. I usually start working around 8pm and will work until around 11 or 12, sometimes later.
I was offered a job through 1-800 flowers, but they required something like 50+ hours a week, with no distractions, background noise, etc.
I've had success on finding work through blogs related to my business.
