anyone interested in a yoga thread?
i figured it is a long shot but here goes!
hi, my name is Lindsey and i have a serious yoga problem
what kind(s) of yoga do you practice? how often? favorite poses? good gear recs?
-the studio i go to does a mash up of bikram, vinyasa, ashthanga, and hatha. (please forgive the spelling!) all done in a heated room. -i got a 3 month membership for christmas, so i'm trying to go 4-5X per week. -camel and standing bow. i want to be able to grab my foot over my head someday! oh, and headstands are fun too! -i'm loving my manduka pro black mat. i feel so much more stable with it.
anyone else want to play??

Re: anyone interested in a yoga thread?
You know I'm in
I am Allison. I usually take the 8PM class during the week and try to get in one weekend day.
what kind(s) of yoga do you practice? Hot Yoga how often? usually 3x a week at minimum favorite poses? Camel & Standing bow good gear recs? Just any kind of top that keeps the girls in.
I practice at Hot Yoga Massapequa.
My favorite teacher is Christine but she is not there much. I also loved Laura who taught on Monday nights but I haven't seen her in awhile. Gina is good too, because she demonstrates all the poses. Although be forewarned, a 90-minute class with her easily turns into 2 hours.

Me me me!
Bikram - I have a 3 month membership and try to go 3-4x/week. My goal is to get up to 5 but I don't think my schedule will permit. I go to Bikram Yoga RVC.
Favorite pose - standing bow (because it challenges me a lot) and standing head to knee (because after a really long time, I can finally lift my leg out straight. On to part 3 and 4 now!)
I love anything lulu.

Im new to yoga but I'd love to be a part of this too!
I'm Cate and i go to Bikram NYC. its hatha yoga in a heated room (i think?)
I've only done it twice but my goal is to go at least 3 times a week.
so far my favorite pose is lying down!!
i definitely need some new gear, so I look forward to seeing others' responses!

Re: anyone interested in a yoga thread?
I just wanted to chime in and say that I have caught yet another cold this season, but I pushed myself to go to hot yoga last night even though I felt blah. I felt amazing by the time I was half-way through the standing series.
I have always heard that you should still go when you are sick and thought it was a bunch of malarky but perhaps there is something to it. I feel better today too!

thats good to hear. they say you're never to sick to go to bikram. i wondered about that. i see that room as a breeding ground for germs!! esp during the beginning breathing exercises!!

Right now I can only do 1-2 classes a week
I practice Jivamukti, but then I try to hit up a Vinyasa or Astanga class. Or a DVD if I need a little extra.
I absolutely LOVE balance poses. Love them. I love tree pose, and Dancer!
As for gear - I'm no expert - I love my Jade Yoga mat...
how do you guys clean your mats?
something weird happened to mine!
I rinsed it off in the shower last night, and then laid it on the rod to dry above the bath - this morning, it faded where the bar was!!! You can see exactly where the bar is as if it was bleached - I am so upset! Thank God it is the bottom of the mat, but it is bothering me - why did that happen??????

Re: anyone interested in a yoga thread?
I've never done yoga, but you all seem to be quite experienced! I am attending my first yoga class tomorrow. What should I expect??
I have horrible balance, will I be making a fool of myself? Hey, maybe after tomorrow I'll start growing an addiction too!

Yoga is such an individual practice, that all different abilities can get in a room together and be doing their own thing.
Do not feel in any way, shape or form, that you have to do somehting the person next to you is doing. Yoga is the best way to shed your ego. The person next to you could be balancing their entire body on one finger... but you do what you can. no one is looking at you at all - mst people have their eyes closed anyway.
Your balance will come with each class....

Re: anyone interested in a yoga thread?
I practice hot yoga and know there are going to be poses I will always struggle with, or never be able to do completely where I look like I am on the cover of yoga journal.
I also have days where I can do every single pose to the best of my ability, and not feel the heat. But then one day--------slam---------I am on the floor and need to sit out for half the class.
It's just how it is, and part of your practice. You can't let it get to you.
Keep the focus on you. When you start looking around the room at what everyone else is doing, that is when you lose your balance and your breath!
It can be intimadating in the beginning, but part of it, is learning to let these feelings go, and see, that everyone is there for them, and not anyone else.

ITA!!
believe me, i am not an expert. some poses i feel like i can really do, and then others (like the one leg balancing) i usually fall a few times each class. i have vertigo, so its bad enough the room is already spinning! whenever i "fall" i always take a second and look around the room to see how others are doing the pose. usually helps me find a way to get back in it.
have a great class!

Re: anyone interested in a yoga thread?
I still struggle with the poses where you need to straighten your leg and lock your knee.
Speaking with some of the teachers, they say it can take YEARS for the average person. But you can absolutely learn and improve a little each day, which is what it is about.
What inspires me is seeing so many different types of people in my classes who keep coming back and doing their best..........young, old, skinny, overweight, very overweight, male, female........

Re: anyone interested in a yoga thread?
So, I made it through Yoga. The class was considered Vinyassa (sp?) Yoga. I'm not really sure what that means though. There's also Fit Yoga and Regular Yoga offered on other days at the gym which I have yet to try.
We didn't have too many difficult positions. I just think it would be a better class to have after a long day at work to help relax. Having it on a Saturday morning, when I normally have energy, just seemed slow instead of a workout. I'll give it a chance and try out the others as well!!
ETA: And I didn't fall on my face!!

Re: anyone interested in a yoga thread?
Good for you! Glad you had a good time.
I had a new teacher tonight who sang and barked in class. It was a fun class, although I struggled a lot towards the end.

i had a singing teacher last night too!! he is very spirited and encouraging during class. whats funny is if we are really nailing a pose, he will refer to you by your last name, like a football coach!
then he sings along with the savasana music at the end...i crack up every time!

Re: anyone interested in a yoga thread?
I had the worst class last night. Now I like teachers who correct you and give advice, but this one was like a bikram boot camp instructor. The room was hotter than usual and she hardly opened the door - and when she did it was just a crack and for no more than 15 seconds.
Can anyone do toe stand and if so, how long did it take you to get there? I really struggle with that one.

That's a hard one!!! Right now I am working on crow - I think everyone has their pose that challenges them - it's nice to have that kind of goal

Re: anyone interested in a yoga thread?
Hi, I'm Thia. I just started practicing yoga again at the end of December. I saw this thread a few days ago and am just finding the time to reply on it.
what kind(s) of yoga do you practice? I just started going to a Barkan Hot Yoga studio. I also do yoga dvds at home. (I have an hour long power yoga dvd w/ Rodney Yee that I really like right now.)
how often? I am trying to practice 5x's a week. 6 if I'm really good. I go to the studio 2/3 x's and then supplement with the tapes to make up the rest.
favorite poses? Downward facing dog is my all time favorite pose. I also really like forwarding bending poses. And I've found in class that I really like tree pose
good gear recs? My friend loves her Manduka pro lite mat. I just ordered one, so I'll see how it goes. I'm also going to try one of their hot yoga towels because the reviews claim that it's very absorbent.

Re: anyone interested in a yoga thread?
I haven't been to yoga in FOUR whole days!
Almost seems like a lifetime.......
I was away on Sat + Sun, lazy on Monday due to a bad day at work, and yesterday, I was scared to venture out because of the weather.
I have no excuses tonight though and cannot wait to get back into it!
