anyone know anything about possums???
this morning as I'm watering my roses and flowers in the backyard, I hear something climbing on my neighbors chain link fence, I figured it was a cat, but when I took a look I saw a long thin tail- it was a possum!!!! followed by her 3 or 4 babies!!!! the babies were actually already a decent size (b/c as I read online they stay in the mom's pouch for like 3-4 months).
I'm a little freaked out thinking it will be a breeding ground now that this one had babies, I've never seen one before in our yard, and I'm just worried they'll get too comfy here. I'm in Queens, I had no idea there was possums in Queens!! it seems as though they were heading to my neighbors yard though since he doesn't mow his lawn in his backyard very regularly.....I was thinking maybe she stopped in my backyard b/c we have a small fig tree?
I called a humane trapper in Middle Village, and he was very nice and explained to me that they're pretty harmless and shouldn't bother me.......he actually said he would advise against trapping it since it can get rid of any pests in the area (various bugs, mice, etc.). I have a cat that goes outside, I'm just worried they might have a confrontation.
sorry this is soooooo long, but does anyone know anything about possums? ever had one living in your area? I'm hoping to hear they're harmless!!
any info is much appreciated!!

We had one in our backyard in Queens when I was growing up. Our dog at the time was a terrier and she was having none of it. She attacked the possum. It was pretty crazy!

wow!! my cat is a feisty kitty, but I doubt she'd take on any possums, especially since she's 14 yrs old! my neighbors next door have a beagle though, so maybe she'll deter them a little?

Re: anyone know anything about possums???
We caught one once while trying to catch a racoon. He seemed sweet. Just sat in the cage. My husband drove him all the way to the other side of the island and set him free and he just moseyed out of the cage. Racoons, on the other hand, I prefer dead.

Same thing happened to us growing up - we caught a possum while trying to catch a raccoon (we caught the raccoon later on).

They are totally harmless although they are freaky looking. When frightened the most they will do is hiss at you.
I raised 2 wild ones when their Mom was hit by a car. They were kinda cute.

I agree. We have several in our yard. We even named them. They are completely passive. I have a friend in the DEC and we were discussing our backyard animals and he even told me that IF a possum has rabies it just dies, whereas if a raccoon has rabies they will 'rage' and bite or go after another animal. Possums are completely passive and do not.

Re: anyone know anything about possums???
I know they are harmless but I am PETRIFIED of possums.
Once we had one living under our shed and DH put out the Hav-a-Heart trap so we could relocate him. Thank God he did not fall for it so we didn't have to deal with it!!

I know can you believe it. I think they have actually finally moved out for the season. They will be missed. I'm sur etehy'll be back. There was a big terrible fight a few weeks ago- something got in and they were slamming against the floor boards- screeching. We followed the fight all over the house. Pretty exciting stuff. Racoons are vicious man.
