Anyone know how long you can crate an ADULT dog?

My parents say that he should be able to go 8-9 hours since he does that at night anyway. I don't know why I am so concerned about leaving him crated while DH and I are at work. DH called the vet and they said it would be fine, why am I so worried???

I am sure she will be fine but I totally would be feeling the same guilt.. I personally couldn't do it.. Is here a way to gate off part of the kitchen w/the crate in it.. Leave the door open w/food and water or just water? Thats what I did up until recently. Now I can leave her and she goes in the crate and doesnt come out till I am home..

We used to do that, but he started jumping over the gate and then he was out...without water OR access to a wee wee pad.

He was doing so well, I don't know what happened. All of a sudden he started marking everything. I am not sure if he senses I'm pregnant or what's going on. We just need to stop this ASAP.

Misty was crated for approx. 10 hours a day until she was 3 or so. We only started leaving her out of the crate when we could trust her and we started out with short periods of time and lenghtened it slowly.
There is no reason why a dog couldn't be crated for 8/9 hours a day, they will just sleep in the crate.

Lilly is crated for about 7 hours each day. She is absolutely fine with it, but I feel so guilty if I have to run errands or anything after work. Chat Icon

I would say 8-9 hours a day is definitely fine. We have crated our chocolate lab since she was a puppy until a couple months ago and she's almost 4 now. Because the dog is inactive & resting he/she is able to hold it longer.

Unfortuantely I was unable to convince DH to fix him up until about a month ago. He has his surgery on Friday of next week. I hope it's not too late.

We did crate him today for 9 hours and he was fine. I think that and getting neutered is the way to go.

Ahhhh...I didn't realize he wasn't fixed...that's what it is. They get to a certain age and decide to start marking.
You should stick with the crate though, even after he's neutered, because once they start marking it can be a very hard habit to break.
