Anyone know of any good OTC sleep meds?

Teaching has led to serious insomnia for me... I get maybe 2-4 hours a night, and then can barely keep my eyes open during the day/nearly want to cry.

Anyone know anything that helps? Doesn't have to be sleep meds, just any other remedies.

Thanks

Re: Anyone know of any good OTC sleep meds?

I have used tylenol pms when i need to sleep and am not able to.
It owrks for some people but can have the opposite affect for others....The first time you use it you will feel VERY drowsy in the morning.

I would try that first because obviously you won't need to see a doctor or get a prescription. Plus i have noticed that doctors are very reluctant in prescribing Ambien or Sonata....

Try Nyquill. I take it even when I do not have a cold and it really helps, and the grogginess is not too bad- it wears off quicker than the OTC stuff I was taking (the generic version of Tylenol Simply Sleep)

Ambien is great for short term use...I used to take it regularly because I had really bad insomnia and I had crazy side effects

I also higly recommend Ambien, it is a prescription, but well worth the doctor visit!

I've found that most OTC sleep meds have a groggy effect, but with Ambien, you actually feel refreshed.

I also have another remedy that helps for me:

This is my nighttime scenario:

I am getting ready to go to bed, and of course my mind is racing with thoughts of what has to be done, so I literally make a list (I'm usually in bed when making this list) of all the thoughts that come to my mind. Then I leave that list right next to my bed. I usually add to the list a few times a night.

It seems to help me.

Also....if you want non-medication alternatives

I have very bad sleeping habits...I have a hard time fallilng asleep..

If you actually count slowly....it really does work
I try variations of counting, making lists of names, veggies, states, Spelling out the numbers as i count...etc...
Do this while taking deep breaths...about 60% of the time it works

DH prefers Nyquil

I try a glass of chocolate milk...lol or tylenol PM since it's non-addictive

Tylenol PM usually helps me. Also, try Sleepytime tea, that's pretty good at relaxing me as well.

I use Benedryl. Sometimes, I'll even dust off the Rosary beads and by time I get to the 3rd Hail Mary, I'm out!!

Unisom - non-addictive and treat only the sleeplessness, not any other meds in it.
