Anyone know? Questions RE: christening

Do both parents of the child need to have made ALL of the sacraments (baptism, communion and confirmation)? I have made all three but neither DH nor his brothers ever made their confirmations. (Apparently, it interfered with hockey practicesChat Icon )

And on that note- do both God parents need to have made all three? The God mother has, and like I said above, neither brother has made confirmation so both contenders for Godfather are short one sacrament....

Anyone have any idea?Chat Icon

As so, I have learned through my own DD's baptsm...All churches seem to have their own "rules'

For my church, they never even asked us as the parents if we made the sacraments...However, we had a major issue because my BIL ( DD's god-father to be) did not...After much ado, the pastor let my BIL be god-father on the premise that he would finish his sacraments...And when I say issue- I mean ISSUE Chat Icon

I'm not sure about the parents but I do know for our parish at least one godparent had to receive all sacraments. If the other godparent has not received all sacraments then our parish refers to them as a Christian witness. I know we didn't have to provide any proof of our sacraments but the godparents did-which was weird to me.

I agree with Kate,.

When I was godmother for my nephew they made me get a certificate from my church stating I made all my sacraments.

Different church, for my niece they never even asked me... or for my BFFs son. And my god parents were never asked for any proof of sacrament nor was I as the Parent asked if my god parents made their sacraments, just that they were catholic.

It seems like these days every parish makes their own rules. Check with yours. Mine didn't ask about any sacraments, just that least 1 Gparent needs a "sponsor card" from their church and if they are Christian and not Catholic they cqan be a "witness"

See now we tried to make my BIL a Christian Witness, and as per our parish, a Christian witness cannot be Catholic Chat Icon

Meanwhile, the same BIL, was Godfather to his niece at another parish, no questions asked Chat Icon

Don't quote me on this, but I don't think it matters if the parents haven't been confirmed, I think it's the godparents that have to be Catholics in good standing (which means they would be confirmed).

But, as the other posters have mentioned, it seems that every parish has it's own approach to how they ask for the information.

From what I remember from reading the book, this is actually correct. If you want someone to be a godparent, they have to be a Catholic in good standing. If they haven't been confirmed, they aren't "in good standing" as an adult in the Church and therefore don't qualify. Christian witnesses are people who aren't Catholic at all, but who are standing up with the godparent.

But again, different parishes enforce differently.....

Yes, it seems that some of them make up the rules as they go along, or so was the case with us...but fortunately it worked out in the end Chat Icon

My church asked where DH and I were christened as well as where we received the other Sacraments. They did ask about the Godparents as well.

Same here, and we needed to provide them with the records of all the sacraments for us and the godparents as well as sponsor certificates from their parishes.

They can make exceptions when needed... I was told that as long as they were baptised its OK even though the churches website said they needed to make all three...

It depends on the parish. I don't think there are any requirements for parents only godparents.

Re: Anyone know? Questions RE: christening

My DH and I are of different faiths, hes not even Christian, and my oldest was bapitized and my youngest is getting baptized next month. So no both parents do not have to have received all 3 sacraments.

Godparents I believe they have had too. My church didnt ask specificly if they did, or ask for proof either. The just both had to be Christian and one had to be Catholic.

The Church also wanted to make sure dh and I were married in church and that I was a memeber of the congregation.

Re: Anyone know? Questions RE: christening

DH is not Catholic, he is methodist (I think Chat Icon Chat Icon ) and we baptized DS in the church. We didnt have to show anything proving so. I guess they figured I received all my sacraments b/c we got married in a church.

As for godparents, it seems from this site that every church varies. My church only required 1 godparent to be catholic and receive all sacraments which we had to show proof of.
