Anyone know what student teacher ratio is in NYC/Queens?
There are 29 or 30 kids in DD's kindergarten class and 1 teacher. they had a para all year long, but first they replaced an old para with someone else mid year, and then about 2 mo ago the para left due to "family emergency" and has not come back yet. I asked the teacher about a month ago if the para is coming back and she told me yes, coming back in a week, well a month later and still no para. I am just worried that 1 teacher is not enough for 30 kids .
I tried google but can't find answers.

Is it a doe school? the cap is 35.
And you're right. It's too many. I have 30 4th graders... It' almost impossible to keep track of them.

FYI- a school's student to teacher ratio tells you very little.My often-overcrowded DOE school had a student to teacher ratio of 14:1, which was accurate because they could ALL teachers. What you want is to find out what the UFT contract says about classroom size.
Look here- lots of info. I taught middle school so I don't know about elementary sizes.

You have to talk to the principal. The chapter leader is for teachers. If you feel you aren't being heard ask to talk to a higher up

This.
However, since you've read up and know the contractual rules, make sure you have the documents on you when you talk to the principal. Lots of principals will yes you to death and act like you don't know what you're talking about.
