I bought one at JC Penney for my living room window and we just used 2 brackets instead of three....works and looks fine.

Just don't use the middle bracket.

Really? I was thinking it would dip in the center, no?

well that is why the rods over a certain length have to have a center bracket. I have a rod with 3 brackets and I don't even see them.

What is your reasoning for not wanting 3 brackets?

If you want them to go back and forth, I would think that you need an even longer rod, so that the rod is reinforced.

What about using a metal rod from home depot or lowes? You can use curtain hardware to install and add finials.

Because it's to go over a sliding door and I want to be able to pull it across either way...

You would need a thicker rod or a solid one like wood to keep it from dipping.

I have a wood one from Ikea that is either 7 or 8 feet long. It didn't come with a center bracket and I didn't add one. It's been up without any issues for 4 years.
