Re: Anyone live in Port Washington?
I lived there for 6 years before we moved upstate. I loved it, but there are pros and cons.
Pros: 1 - School district is excellent! 2 - Restaurants are great 3 - you are right by the water 4 - they have great parks there (sands point preserve) 5- fast commute to NYC 6- Great shopping in nearby Manhasset. Americana, Whole Foods, BB&B, etc.
Cons: 1 - far from any and all hywys - expect a 20-25 minute ride to get to the LIE or Northern State 2- traffic - 2 roads in, two roads out. Even if you know the short cuts, it takes forever to get to anywhere else in LI. 3 - Property taxes are astronomical (you pay for the great school district) 4 - Parking at the train station is horrible! I lived a 5 min drive from the station. However, I had to leave my house 25 minutes before my train just to hope to find a spot. Plus if I left my house after 7:15AM, I did not have a prayer of finding a spot in ANY of the 6 parking lots surrounding the station. Oh yeah, it is also $300 extra a year (in addition to the LIRR ticket) a year for the "privilege" of parking in the stations lots. If you park anywhere else you WILL be ticketed.

Re: Anyone live in Port Washington?
I grew up there and loved it. If we could afford too, we'd move there in a minute!
GREAT location, esp, if you need to commute, great SD, although it has slipped some since I went there, wonderful community.
My only complaint would be that it can be really congested on the weekends since it is a peninsula surrounded by water.
Aside from a few shady sections, the town is gorgeous with many wonderful developments of beautiful colonials, capes, etc. I love how different the houses are there.

We moved here in December and I love it. DH grew up here, and always wanted to come back. The commute to the city is great, and the school district is good too.

I lived there for a few years before I bought my condo and absolutely loved it!! Would have stayed if I could have afforded to buy there.
Totally agreed with the others - the biggest problem is the hike to any major road. And be careful - certain areas turn bad quickly!!

Re: Anyone live in Port Washington?
The only areas I'd steer clear from is right by Harbor Rd almost in Sands Point. There is a state run project there, and that area near it isn't so great. JMO.
That is the only section I wouldn't want to buy in. Manorhaven has smaller, or two family homes with little property, but they are probably a bit more affordable and near the pool/beach. By the HS and Jr HS is really nice....cute homes....Salem is beautiful. Soundview has many split levels. My favorite section, aside from Sands Point is Manhasset Bay Estates. THat's just East of Plandome Rd, up through Mackey Ave. They have some BEAUTIFUL large homes there, but they can easily run $800k or higher. Beacon Hill is another beautiful area. I love the tudors, colonials, etc - just gorgeous!

I agree. I lived in Manorhaven for 6 years. It is very safe. As far as affordable the house next door to ours sold last year for $789K and it was a two family.
