Anyone live/lived in the Saratoga Springs or Queensbury areas?
After our short sale fell through down here we started discussing the possibility of moving upstate. BF's job is partially up in that area and he is away from home alot to travel up there, so it makes sense to move. His family owns a vacation home in Lake George so they are up there very often. We're looking at Queensbury, NY (the town over from Lake George) and the Saratoga Springs/Ballston Spa/Clifton Park areas. We'd like a quaint family oriented town but still close enough to bars and shops that we wouldnt have to drive 30 minutes to get to the nearest mall or restaurant.
Does anyone have any insight on any of these areas? I know Queensbury well enough to know I like it, but since I dont know the other areas its hard to compare and know where would be best. And any insight into living up that way in general would be great.

Yay! I'm glad to hear that people love living up there
We're going up this weekend to scope out Queensbury and Clifton Park - not sure which area is nicer but it looks like Clifton Park might be more expensive than Queensbury

I just FMed you back He's a district manager for a major car company but his district is kind of all over up there, so we're not tied to any particular town...however I do have to find a job up there, so I would like to be within an hour of a large industry area (like albany I guess). I'm in Customer Service/Marketing - if you know of anything please share
He knows the Queensbury area pretty well since his family owns a house in Lake George and he's gone up there since he was a kid. I happen to like it alot, but we're both willing to explore other towns. We've heard from family/friends that Saratoga Springs/Clifton Park/Ballston Spa are nice, but we havent ventured down there yet. Totally open to any other suggestions!!

We visit Saratoga every summer, it's gorgeous up there. We have often discussed moving up there.
Saratoga has an awesome walkable downtown area, so does Ballston Spa. Albany is a quick drive away too, about 20-30 minutes.

Re: Anyone live/lived in the Saratoga Springs or Queensbury areas?
I grew up In Bolton Landing, which is just north of Lake George. I worked in Queensbury though, and I have brothers that live in Queensbury and Saratoga.
I LOVE Saratoga..I would not mind moving back up there someday (can't get DH on board though)
Saratoga is nice because it is such a quaint/cute place to walk around. Has all the shopping you could want, and is not too far from ALbany.
My parents still live in Bolton and I have another brother who lives in Lake George, which is also a really nice town, its just that the further north you get the more isolated you will feel in the winter months (summers are awsome no matter where you are)
Just make sure when you think about the move, you think about the longer/harsher winter compared to LI
I would go in a minute though...I loved growing up and going to school in a smaller setting, I miss that small hometown feel so much.

Thanks so much for the reply! I know we definately dont want to be in Lake George mostly because the whole town closes down during the winters, but we're very seriously considering both Queensbury and Saratoga Springs...as well as Wilton.
Since your brothers live in Queensbury and Saratoga can you tell me the differences between the two areas? You said that Saratoga is a quaint/cute place to walk around. Do you find that Queensbury doesnt have quite the same appeal? I think that one things we would like (not a must have per say but it would be nice) is a cute little downtown area or main street type place to walk around. I'm not familiar enough with the older part of queensbury so I dont know if there is an area like that there??

Re: Anyone live/lived in the Saratoga Springs or Queensbury areas?
I live about 40-45 minutes south of Queensbury/Saratoga. I am 15 minutes away from Clifton Park. If you have any questions, FM me.
If you are commuting to Albany then I think Clifton Park is a better choice 20 minutes to Albany - 20 minutes to Saratoga).
ETA: Taxes in Saratoga County (all the places you are looking) are cheaper than surrounding areas (ie Schenectady Conuty).

For the main street type walk around I would pick Saratoga. Queensbury isin't really the walk around type of town in my opinion anyway, you would have to drive spot to spot. There is a really nice park (Crandall) nearby for kids, and there are cute little spots throughout the town, but they are not connected to each other. Whereas Saratoga is Def. a walk around, cute place to go. The mall is okay, and there are big box stores available in one part, then the town has lots of cute shops, and beautiful park, and many nice restaurants. My suggestion is you go up, and spend some real time visiting, there are very nice neighborhoods in both areas. I prob. would not go much further South than Saratoga, just because you do want it to be an easy trip to the Lake and river, that is the beauty of living up there..GOOD LUCK!
