Anyone On Know anything about collecting unemployment?
I am beating my head against the wall with this one......
I had been employed full-time for at least two years with the same employer. In calendar year 2009, I actively worked from January to mid-May when I went out on disability. I was disabled from May to December 8. December 8 I resigned my position and took a p/t position elsewhere. I have reason to believe that I will be "let go" from this part time job in the near future. Based upon the research I have done, my benefit year is Oct/08 to Sept/09.
Hypothetically, if I earned $50K from my full-time job, can someone tell me what I would get from unemployment? Is it possible that I would get max of $405/week even though I voluntarily left my job to take a part-time job? How can I make more from unemployment than I am making at my part-time job? This makes no sense to me, and yet my mom insists that that is correct.

You cannot collect unemployment if you voluntarily left your full-time job.

Is that correct? Are you saying that if I worked for ten years and then left my job for a better opportunity and then got fired, I'd be SOL? That doesnt make sense either

Re: Anyone On Know anything about collecting unemployment?
To the best of my knowledge they take into account the last 3 quarters of employment to determine your rate.
If you get let go from this job you should be able to collect based on that.
I may be wrong about the quarters but your disability will be not be taken into account meaning that it won't count toward your benefit.
You may not get the full $405 since your income was lower and you weren't working the whole time.
You will qualify for an extra $25 though no matter what I believe.

Re: Anyone On Know anything about collecting unemployment?
You are trying to find out about collecting unemployment for the job you left voluntarily to work the part-time job? Am I correct?
If you left voluntarily and essentially "quit" -- then you are not entitled to unemployment. That is the short answer. But if there were certain reasons that you quit that were attributable to the employer, then you might have a case...but that is not an easy one to prove if you did essentially leave the job for another job.
You have to show "good cause" as to why you quit the original job in the first place, not just to take another time (part-time or not).
Examples that are included but not limited to would be,
Unsafe working conditions; Or a job that was causing you illness or putting your health/physical safety at risk. (Medical documents must be provided).
Or your employer broke an original contract that you had with them.
Unsafe working conditions being asked of you.
Its a hairy situation to get unemployment at this point...its about the burden of you proving your case.

Re: Anyone On Know anything about collecting unemployment?
And see, this is where my confusion is. I guess I will have to wait and see what unemployment says...I was just trying to get my ducks in a row before hand. However, I would think that armed with the knowledge that you could work essentially 10 years and then voluntarilly leave your job to work somewhere else and subsequently be fired for no reason after a short period of employment, and not be able to collect any unemployment would make people never leave their jobs.

You're right...you are able to collect if you get fired from your part time job. There are some requirements that need to be met - the FAQ link I posted above mentions being terminated from a PT job and how your benefits will be calculated.
Good luck!

But thats the risk you take when moving on to a better job- whether that be more money, less hours, shorter commute, etc...

this is correct. you can only collect if you were fired, or laid off, not if you voluntarily leave for ANY reason.

Re: Anyone On Know anything about collecting unemployment?
I thought that you had to be employed by your last employer for at least 6 months and then let go to collect unemployment.
I could be wrong though.
If you work part time, you probably won't collect the full $405/week. I worked FT at my last job before I was laid off and I make $385/week + $25 from the fed.

Re: Anyone On Know anything about collecting unemployment?
There is definitely some confusion here.
You can leave 10 jobs for other jobs and then if you get laid off you most certainly can collect UE even if it's part time.
It's an average rate they take over several quarters.
Like I said before it probably won't be the max amt but you can most certainly collect if you get laid off/fired without cause from your current job.
