Anyone out of EI dealing with the school district?
In a nutshell my district is very small and somehow has never dealt with an Autistic kid that doesn't speak. We need to have him in a special program in order to continue his ABA & discreat trials and they have no such program. We are trying to go out of district and they tell me it's not in their budget?! I am so livid with them and I probably need to get an Advocate. Does anyone know any websites or where to get info on parents rights and children with special needs. Before I go off on them I need to know what I can and can't demand. I def. know they need to find placement for him but I can't let them push him into a mainstream class because he will just get lost.

Yeah, if your district does not offer the program that your DS needs, they have to pay for him to go to an out of district program.
LIAC is an advocacy agency that may be able to help if you need it.

I second the LIAC , they will explain everything to you. Ask for Linda Milch, she really knows her stuff.

Thanks girls. I called today & spoke with Maureen and she said the budget is Bull! At least now I know for sure! Tomorrow an advocate named Jennifer will call me to discuss things further.

Good luck!! I haven't had to use an advocate thus far, but I know people that have, and they have always been great at pushing the district to give what they are required to.

I just saw this now - I am for you! I'm glad you contacted LIAC - they know their stuff. A district is legally responsible to provide the most appropriate education for your child! They really took advantage of you. Squeaky wheels get the oil all the time in secial ed, unfortunately - so squeak away!!!!

Re: Anyone out of EI dealing with the school district?
Thanks! The advocate was wonderful and super helpful with her advice. We had an informal meeting and they will tell me by March if they can develop a program with the childern enrolling for 09. What they told me is they need to observe the children and make sure that they can all make a class and there not far apart on the spectrum- meaning the kids need to have similar issues. Not sure if there Bullsh*tting me or it's for real. They did agree if they don't have a program set by then I will be able to chose another program outside of the district which I'm happy about. So now I just have to wait.

That is true about seeing what the profiles of the other incoming children will be, but have they never had children with autism in the past? Do they have any self-contained classes? The Parental Due Process Rights would also be helpful to you. Your advocate can probably send you a copy. GL!
