Anyone planning on trying for a VBAC...
...that has family or DH who is totally against it?
My DH and my mother are having a fit that I want to try for a VBAC. They are both so afraid that Im going to die or the baby is going to die or something just completely horrific is going to happen. A part of me feels like Im being selfish even considering it since they are so upset about it. I had a great c/s recovery with my DD so Im not really nervous about having another one.

Re: Anyone planning on trying for a VBAC...
I'm trying a VBAC. I figured its a very small chance of uterine rupture but theres also a small chance of infection and other post-op complications of a c-section so I figured they even out. My family is nervous about it.
I spoke to my OB who suggested that I choose a c/s date and if I go into labor before we'll do a VBAC. If I don't go into labor she will NOT induce me b/c apparently there is more of a risk of rupture with the meds and we agreed then to do a c/s

Just had the same exact converstaion with my OB today - if I go into labor before c/s date we'll do VBAC, if not she will not induce me for the same reasons - she said they can't use the meds. Is VBAC more dangerous? I need to ask her more questions!

This is what I am doing too. I have a c/s date, but if I can go into natural labor before I will try - but I said to my obgyn that if at any point he or I feel c-s is necessary then just say the word.
My understanding is that the use of pitocin to induce labor makes the risk of uteren rupture much higher than if you went into labor on your own. So in order to get a vbac you actually have to go into labor on your own.
A vbac can be dangerous but it depends why you had a c/s the first time. If you had failure to progress then you will be unlikely to be offered the chance of a c/s. Whereas if you had a breech baby they might let you try. DS was a footling breech. I went into labor naturally with him but b/c he was foot first, there was no chance in the universe for me to have a natural birth. So far DD is presenting head down - so there is a possibility of me having her naturally.
As for the epidural it depends upon your obgyn. Some literature I have read says NOT to give it to VBAC patients b/c it can mask the pain and problems of uterin rupture. So if you are thinking that you will need pain meds you might want to ask your obgyn their thoughts on pain meds for vbac labor.
