Anyone rent on Fire Island for the summer?

DH has been obsessing over this for years and I keep talking him out of it because renting a house just doesn't scream 'vacation' to me ......it seems like 'work'

I am ready to cave b/c he wants it so bad - but I have an ON the Ocean requirement. Not 2 blocks away, not "Ocean view," not on the bay or the harbor - I mean, on the sand, waves crashing from the Ocean -

Pros/Cons? Experiences?

We also have 4 & 6 year old boys

Have you looked at the rentals offered on VRBO? I had checked into renting a week or so, and everything I came across was just so drab looking for the price they are asking!

It's all public beaches there so I don't know what on the beach would really get you. I would go for something like ocean view or a very short walk to the beach bc I'd prefer a nice private deck to hang out on versus having the beach crowds in view at all times. We rented in Ocean Beach when I was a kid and have great memories from that. I also used to go with relatives some summers to help with the kids and babysit, which I can definitely see the appeal of now. If you can bring someone over for a night or two so you and DH can go out at night that might be fun. Ocean Beach is a lot of fun with great restaurants, playgrounds, shops, etc.
