Anyone teach their dc more than 1 language?
my ds is 2 months old and i would love for him to learn spanish and english. my parents live next door to us and constantly are with him, and only speak spanish to him. i also speak spanish, but b/c dh doesn't, we only speak english at home, unless we are at my parents place. my ques is, should we just be teaching him one language first, or if we speak both will he get confused? and when should we start? tia

Re: Anyone teach their dc more than 1 language?
start speaking to him in both languages right away. my parents did this for me in italian and english, making me bilingual from the start. sure, when i was a toddler i sometimes spoke to people in a mixture of both languages, but that didn't mean i was confused, it meant that i knew both languages equally well!
it's a WONDERFUL thing to have a bilingual child!

My boyfriends family is Purto Rican. They all speak English as a primary language but his parents speak spanish to each other. I asked them to teach my son spanish...when the time comes. I'm hoping they will start early...while he's learning to talk.

DH and I both speak spanish and speak both languages to our 18 month old. The earlier the better.

Re: Anyone teach their dc more than 1 language?
We want our son to learn both english & spanish, s our nanny speaks to him in only Spanish all day long, DH & I speak to him only in English (although sometimes I do speak to him in spanish but rarely)
I spoke ot my Ped about this and he said a nd I quote
"teaching him 2 languages is oneo fthe best gifts you can give him"
he said that it forces DS to use a greater portionof his brain and a second language is always a plus in life. I asked if DS would speak later he said no not realy. He also said you should not speak to him in both languages at first you have to pick one if not it could confuse him a bit.

My family and I have spoken Italian to my ds since he was born he is now 16 months and understands commands in both languages, and says words from both languages. My dh does not speak Italian so he speaks to him only in English and so far so good. Like everyone else said the younger the better.

We try very hard. Leo's first language is spanish, but he is barely around. So, when he is around, its spanish.
In the car, we listen to spanish kids songs and I work on spanish vocabulary with him.
I don't like the idea of Josh not being able to communicate with his relatives. We are heading to PR this summer, its okay if I can't speak it, I really don't have much to say to them anyway , but I don't want Josh to feel left out or less "spanish" if that makes sense.

My friend was trying to teach his son english and japanese, it got confusing for the child, so they told him to just focus on one mostly and the other a little here and there.

That's odd cause I child can learn upto 5 language with relative ease, I learned English & Spanish and am fluent in both , I can read, write and ofcourse speak it.
I have read that at about the age of 8 it starts to become difficult and you can have an accent in the new language you are trying to learn.

Re: Anyone teach their dc more than 1 language?
good to hear...i was worried that he would get confused with both languages at the same time, since only my parents and family will speak to him in spanish, and dh doesn't know spanish so no choice there...i really want him to pick up both languages early and it's gonna be hard sticking to just one in the beginning..so i guess we'll stick to mixing both of them in there

Re: Anyone teach their dc more than 1 language?
I have spoken Spanish to DS since he was born. When DH is around I speak in Spanish to DS and repeat the same thing in English, so DH can understan waht I am saying.
At 2, I can say that DS is bilingual... he'd say words like water, milk, book, duck, shoes in English to DH and in Spanish to me. I don't think that he is confused at all.

My family speaks spanish to my son and Dh's speak Greek to him. Dh and I speak English to him. We have since he was born. Now at the age of 2, he understands all 3 and speaks in all 3 and changes the languages depending on who he is speaking to. It's amazing! Start Now!

This is identical to my life.... My parents (mom is colombian and dad is greek) would leave me during the day with my hispanic great grandmother, and by kindergarted I was enrolled in greek orthodox private school. I was/am trilingual now because of this, and had no problem communicating with anyone in my family at all!
