I am on the website - and they don't say how much it costs monthly for those living above the poverty line...
I just may have to call them...

Re: Anyone use Family Health plus for health insurance?
My children use the child health plus we pay a small payment a month. My dh is self employed and does not have insurance and when I tried for the family health plus they wouldn't give it to dh they only gave it to me because I was pregnant at the time. (I actually still have it and it's been all most a yr since ds was born) if you have any questions feel free to ask and I can try to help.

Re: Anyone use Family Health plus for health insurance?
I have child health plus for both of my kids. (family health plus covers adults that have barely any income) If you are above the income qualifications, you have to call each plan to find out their rate. The phone numbers are listed on the Child Health Plus site. However, I did hear that some sort of legislation is being passed in NYS to make the premium $40 max for each child if you are over the limits.
ETS: even with the monthly premiums, it's the best insurance you will find and probably much cheaper than a family plan through an employer based plan. No co-pays for anything, covers dental and vision and you have an actual plan. I have United Health Care for DS and Empire for DD. I prefer United though since they don't require referrals.

If you are above the poverty line the rate varies based on how far above you are. You will have to call them.

OK - I thought so - with the new job I'm taking, the cost for insurance for myself, and DH will be high, but with a 3rd (child) its astronomical. Everyone that works there uses child health plus only for their kids, and its somehting I'm completely unfamiliar with....

Re: Anyone use Family Health plus/ child Health Plus for health insurance?
I *believe* that I heard on the radio that your family has to make less than $51,000 a year combined income to qualify for Family Health Plus.
But I could be wrong, I believe that is what I heard. I don't know anything about Child Health Plus though.

Re: Anyone use Family Health plus/ child Health Plus for health insurance?
I called them a couple of weeks ago. Both DH and I have our own insurance through work. To add DD on my or his plan it would cost A LOT of money. I called Child Health Plus a couple of weeks ago. If you are above the proverty line the rep told me the premium would be between $160-$180 a month depending on the type of plan you choose. He also told me that in order for your child to have coverage on the first of any given month the child has to be born before the 20th of the prior month. So if your child is born on Feb. 21st you can't get coverage until April 1st.
Hope that helps!

You actually have to enroll the child before the 21st to be effective the next month. So someone with a child already can enroll on the 20th and have coverage by March 1st.
I'm not sure if you already had your baby classy..but you should know that your current insurance will NOT cover your newborns nursery stay unless you are adding that newborn to your own policy. I had to go through months of appeals to get DD's astronomical bills paid because I was under the impression she was covered under my insurance because of the way the policy reads (newborns covered for 30 days under mom's insurance). I was told it's NYS law that the child has to be added to your own policy to be covered. Just something to think about!

So, if my COBRA ends at the end of April - I need to enroll him before the 20th for it to be ready for May 1?
Thanks ladies!

Yup! And I would send your stuff directly to the health plan itself, just print the application off their site and send it to the address listed for whichever one you choose. I wouldn't bother with going to a "center" to enroll or having someone come to your house. It just complicates the process (and they aren't really nice to be honest).
I don't know which site you are looking at, but go to this link for a list of the plans, scroll alllll the way down to Suffolk County and click on the health plan for the address to send your stuff to the plan you choose.

Re: Anyone use Child Health Plus for health insurance?
Summers advice was right on the money but I will add that as a former Empire BCBS employee , CHP applications were KNOWN to take forever, and I heard that about other insurance carriers as well...so get that App in and follow up on it with the company directly.
BAsically he will be covered through the company you choose to adminster the CHP.

Thanks - I do want to start that ASAP - I am quite anal with any type of paperwork - my certifications, continuing ed credits, anything to do with insurance - you should have seen me with the maternity leave stuff - I spoke to HR, sat and had a meeting with them even though they said it wasn't necessary, and I STILL called a hundred times - they definitely knew my name by the time I had this baby - I'm shocked I didn't get a card from them!
I will be probably worse about this!!! My IBS was acting up last night just thinking about it

It's really quite misleading and everyone that came into my room at the hospital from billing told me each and every time that the baby would be covered for 30 days under my policy, even the doctor's office told me that at her 2 day appt. No one said "if the baby is added as a dependent to your policy" though. The insurance company doesn't pay the baby's bills until after the 30 days expires to see if you add him/her to your policy.
You could always add your DC to your policy for a month and then take him/her off after you apply for CHP and cite the reason being that CHP is less expensive. That is a "reason" for enrolling on the form.
