Anyone volunteer at an animal shelter?

I just filled out an application to volunteer for save-a-pet in Manhattan. I would love to help out these poor animals in some way without actually adopting one. Since I work 12 1/2 hour shifts and am not home sometimes for 14-15 a day, its not fair for any animal that would be alone that long. Needless to say, this is also what prevents me from fostering a pet. (Since I have posted before that I have a shih tzu, she is really the family dog and lives the life of luxury at my mom's house on LI with plenty of people around. I don't want it to seem like I have her and keep her locked up all day in my city apt)

Can anyone tell me what it is like to volunteer? What type of things do you do there? Do you get to spend a lot of time with the animals or do you wind up doing a lot of clerical work, or things like that?

There are many older dogs that would love the comfort of sleeping in a safe home waiting for their owner to come home from work. Most however will be euthanized. Spending 12-15 hours alone at home sounds great when compared to the certainty they face.
