Anyone watch Dateline about the "Outsiders" re the Amish teens?
I find it very heartwrenching what they have to go through with their rumspringa (sp?).
Anyone else find it sad for them having to choose between family and the outside world?

I watched it also
I really felt bad for them- how horrible to have to make that choice

I think there is another one, or a repeat next week.
It reminded me of a reality show we had watched about 2 years ago called Amish in the City. It was actually a very good show, and showed their time of rumspringa and how some decided not to go back to their families...

I saw it... very interesting. That would be a hard decision for sure, but I'd probably go back to my family (though I can't say for sure what I'd end up doing).

I saw part of it. The Devil's Playground is a documentary of Rumspringa.
As much as it is a painful decision, I am still amazed by the numbers that return to the Amish community. It is a huge testament to their sense of community & keeping them on the path that they chose for their children.

I watched it too, and I've seen other shows like this.
In a way I feel bad that they have such a hard decision to make, but then the othe half of me, is happy that they even get the choice. They are not forced to stay.

I saw 90% of it, which kids went back (if any)?

I missed this one. Darn it!
I find the Amish soooo facinating. I have been to Amish country more times than I can remember, and LOVE it. I took German all throughout high school and learned out them. Their entire community intrigues me, and I am so mad that I missed this!!

I think it is fear that keeps a lot from leaving. If I was 20 and had to make a choice to never speak to my family again, it would be hard. I think if they were not shunned for leaving a lot more would.

I TiVo'd it and watched it tonight. The girl (Lena) hadn't yet decided, but sounded like she would stay out and hoped her boyfriend would too. If the boyfriend goes back, she will think about it, and maybe go back in 5 years. I think she stays out though.
The kid who ran away and then got arrested for setting fire to a buggy (Danny) said he would go back in a few years. Off camera his father told the reporter that he would be welcomed back by the family and community and that they wanted him home. He would just have to go to confession and apologize.
The boy who left a while back (skinny with the mustache and the baseball cap that says "Rebel"), that helped the other kid escape was staying out, hoping to earn a degree in Computer Science. Wants to get married and buy a house.
Nelson, the boy with the sub-woofers in his buggy said he would be baptized at the end of his Rumspringa and that he could be happy if he met a nice girl.
They said that 8 out of 10 kids go back. That amazes me!

I guess it's just what they are most familiar with. And it must be very hard to start a totally new life all by yourself.

I watched it because I use to drive through Ashland all the time on my way from Cleveland to Columbus. It is in the middle of nowhere so I understand why they end up going back.
I am truly excited for Lena, she is going to get her GED and make something out of herself. I hope she outgrows drinking like a lush now that she is free from the rules.
