anyone watch Orville ? help
is this a spoof of star trek? I watched last week for the first time and wasnt sure what was going on

It's not a pure "spoof", like "Space Balls" spoofs on Star Wars, since they aren't making fun of Star Trek in the traditional spoof way.
There are huge references to ST, and it's obvious that that is their starting point, but I think they're trying to be a legitimate stand-alone show. If you've never seen any Star Trek shows, you won't be missing anything. If you've never seen Star Wars, you'll miss half of the jokes (or more) in Space Balls.
It's almost written as if Seth McFarlan was actually a captain of a small ship in the Star Trek universe. The main story line is the ship actually exploring deep space, but there is a lot of character driven humor in there.

That's exactly how he described it, too. A spoof but not. Maybe a bit like the movie Galaxy Quest? He does like it, I still haven't gotten around to watching it. Not when Moana is on repeat 24/7.

That's exactly how he described it, too. A spoof but not. Maybe a bit like the movie Galaxy Quest? He does like it, I still haven't gotten around to watching it. Not when Moana is on repeat 24/7.
It's not really Galaxy Quest. That was silly. This show isn't silly. Humorous, and not your typical Star Trek personal interactions and situations.
I really like it. They don't go too far in any direction. They're not too serious, not to over the top silly, not Family Guy type humor, etc.
