Anyone who has stripped or refinished furniture...

My parents gave us some very good dressers from their original set in the 70's. But I don't like the finishes. I was thinking of stripping them and then restaining them. (and putting new hardware on.) We're going to be short on money when we finally buy a house--but is this worth doing?

And where can I find information to learn how to do this?

It is worth it if you have the time and energy. It really wasnt' that bad but it can get messy.

Re: Anyone who has stripped or refinished furniture...

We JUST did this with an old Ikea dresser... we were about to throw it out, but decided to strip it and refinish it. It cost next to nothing to do... DH sanded down the dresser top to remove the finish, distressed the wood and stained it a darker color. I painted the bottom part and then sanded the edges to give it an antique-y look... here's the link:

It cost about $20, and took a couple of days to finish.
