anyone who works with autistic kids....
I have a 7 year old with Aspergers and a 4 year old that is perfectly "normal". I am NAROTIC about my 8 month old since they say autism runs in families and what are my chances of having 2 "normal" boys after one with aspergers!! I have read online about early detection in infants.... anyone out there believe in any of the research?

My 5 year old niece has Ashbergers (sp?) - Her 9 year old brother doesn't. I have read some of the research - I still don't know what to think about it?

I believe there are quite a few people on the NFR board who work with autistic children. I teach special ed but have very little experience with autistic children.

Re: anyone who works with autistic kids....
I work with autistic children and while I'm sure I would be neurotic as well, there is a VERY good chance that your youngest will be "normal." I've worked with lots of kids whose brothers and sisters were all typically developing. I can imagine how it would always be in the back of your mind though. I haven't read a lot of the research on infants, but I do think that you sometimes see signs early on before the age when kids are typically diagnosed. Have you noticed anything in particular that is concerning you? Feel free to FM

it's good to know what to look out for, but the internet can be a bad thing when it makes you start worrying unneccessarily. i can't tell you how many times i've "diagnosed" myself with some kind of disease after reading on the internet. you can really make yourself crazy. chances are your youngest will be just fine.

Re: anyone who works with autistic kids....
My nephew has autism. I have not heard of an infant that young even showing any signs. Of course, I would be very concerned and worried too. My brother and SIL never had another child because of this fear. I am sure everything will be fine..just keep positive.

Re: anyone who works with autistic kids....
I just wanted to add - When my niece was a baby - It was obvious (in hindsight) that something wasn't right. She never wanted to be held - she didn't make the same cute noises that other babies make - As she got to be 1 and 2 - even 3 and 4 - she wouldn't talk - She prefer's her dog to anyone else.
ETA: This is looking back on it when Early intervention got invloved because she wasn't speaking and it was time for her to start Kindergarten.
