Honestly, I find that I'd usually rather not have dessert instead of having sugar free desserts. They usually don't taste very good. Sugar-free pudding or jello is good, though. I've had several types of cookies and candy over the years, but none of them tasted really good. It's possible that they have improved the taste in the last few years, but I don't know about them.

ok - thanks for the feedback! that's a bummer though. we have someone in the fam who was recently diagnosed and i want to try and find some desserts that could be served at get togethers so they're not left out.

DH would rather people not make the effort to get him sugar free desserts. He really doesn't like them and he doesn't really crave sweets. It is actually more helpful if people have sugary sweets on hand just in case he gets low sugar. He finds that the sugar substitutes cause the runs and the taste is only so-so.

Most bakeries sell "no sugar" desserts; cakes and cookies.

thanks - this is also good to know. just out of curiousity, if you don't mind sharing, was your DH diagnosed as a kid or an adult? the person i know is an adult and i am just assuming that after always being able to eat, and liking, sweets that they may want to eat something when everyone else is eating dessert at gatherings.
thx again for the advice - this is someone i am close enough to ask if they would rather i not - so i will keep this in mind.

Re: anyone with diabetes or with a diabetic family member?
my father is a type 1 diabetic since he was 17. he is on an insulin pump. he eats on occasion the murrays sugar free cookies or sometimes a sugar free ice pop. but other than that he really does not eat anything sweet at all.

He was diagnosed at 18, but with juvenile diabetes. He is on an insulin pump. His brother, 5 years younger, was diagnosed when he was 18, too. I don't think he is so interested in sweets either, but I am not sure.

Mr Bill's Cheesecakes is the name of the place. I will eat the sugar free kind even though I'm not diabetic, I can't taste the difference.

Re: anyone with diabetes or with a diabetic family member?
DH was diagnosed at the age of 39. He was always a big sweets person...would eat a whole sleeve or oreos and a glass of milk for dessert or something similar. Over the last few years, he's lost a taste for the sweets...he doesn't like much of the sugar free stuff. We try every product that comes out that is new. He does like the sugar free Milano's though.
However...for a family gathering, he will usually have a little of the regular desserts if he wants something. Every once in awhile won't hurt too badly. Most of the time, he doesn't even touch it, because it's too sweet for him after not having it all this time.

Re: anyone with diabetes or with a diabetic family member?
Valley Caterers on Franklin Ave. in Franklin Square makes great sugar free pies. My dad loves them. King Kullen also has a great sugar free angel food cake that we get for holidays and just add berries. Honestly, I can't even tell the difference. Jell-o has a sugar free line that is really good, too.
I got a cook book a few years ago called ""How Sweet it is...Without the Sugar" and have made a few things out of it. My dad's favorite is the chocolate chip cookies (though personally I don't like them). But there are other great recipes in there too.

Re: anyone with diabetes or with a diabetic family member?
It's hit or miss. My dad's diabetic. I actually fare best with fruit pies from King Kullen w/ him. The sugar free apple pies are good...I even eat them...but usually come frozen. He usually just prefers to have Murray's cookies or eskimo pie ice cream pops (no sugar added). The only cookies that are good are Murray's though. The diatetic ones you get at the store usually have a nasty after taste.
Also, if you like to bake, you can make something using Splenda instead of sugar and they can eat it. HTH

Re: anyone with diabetes or with a diabetic family member?
I was just diagnosed in December with diabetes.
I have made some recipes with splenda instead of sugar, you would use the same amount of splenda as you would sugar. To me, Splenda does not make anything taste weird like the other sugar substitutes do.
I have a good peanut butter cookie recipe that is flourless, and really good. Let me know if you would like the recipe.

I was diagnosed at age 13.... Halloween never had the same excitement after that....
I was never really big into sweets, even before I was diagnosed, and afterwards, whenever I ate too much sweets, I felt really sick and light headed, so when that happens enough times, you tend to avoid those foods...
