No But I have two cousins that do, and I may apply, not sure yet. They are doing a big recruitment right now for 50 unemployed nurses..

Re: Anyone work in nursing at NSLIJ?
It seems every once in a while they advertise an open house for nurses. Maybe this summer after the new nurses graduate?
This job market is horrible, who would have thought that nurses would have trouble landing jobs. When I graduated I had hospitals calling and leaving messages on my answering machine every day to fill out an application.

Do you think the need is in waves so to speak? is nursing over-flooded? Nurses I know said as recently as 7 years ago they have no trouble seeking a job and that was with an associates not BSRN. Now it seems near impossible.

I'm a social worker (I also work in the health care sector) and have applied at LIJ and have not gotten so much as a response that my resume was received.
I heard you need to have an "in" to get a job there.
I suppose that's true everywhere these days though!

I think this is true. The older nurses say that in the 90's there was a hiring freeze as well, but I think the current freeze as well as job shortage is due to the economy. Then when I graduated, they were looking for nurses like crazy, now its back to "nobody's hiring again". I'm sure when the economy starts to upturn again, they will be recruiting.
Many nurses came out of retirement and went back to work because of a spouse losing a job or just for extra money. There was also a huge return to nursing school by people who thought (like the rest of us did) that nursing is a recession proof career, which we now know is not the case.
Because the market is now in the hospitals favor, they can be picky about who they hire which is why we are seeing job postings asking for experienced nurses only, BSN, certifications already in hand, and for those that are willing to hire new BSN grads they are asking for transcripts showing GPA of 3.5 and higher.
My advice for people that only have ADN and are new grads, start an online BSN program ASAP. Without this, its going to be very difficult if not impossible to compete with BSN new grads.

Re: Anyone work in nursing at NSLIJ?
I am a nurse for 10 yrs and when I was a new graduate I could have had my pick of any job. I landed an awesome job right out of school.
I hear from the new grads today that it is MUCH harder to get a nursing job and you sort of have to take what they give, which wasnt the case 10 yrs ago.
I also teach for a major nursing program and the enrollment has been off the charts so to speak bc of all the people thinking that nursing is the career where you wont be laid off or "recession proof" as someone else mentioned.
So many of my students were 2nd career students.

Ah yes those were the days! Graduated 9 years ago and landed my first job where I was doing my clinicals at. The manager actually approached me about a job. I never had a formal interview until I moved to Tx 3 yrs ago to find a job. Not sure how bad it's gotten in NY but where I am now the area is being flooded with new grads and not enough jobs. I recently went back to get my BSN to make myself look more marketable despite my years of experience I fear that might not be enough if I wanted a job change.

Re: Anyone work in nursing at NSLIJ?
It comes in waves. When my sister first graduated in the mid 90's, she had to work basically doing crappy work (like an interneven thought she was BSRN) at a doctor's office before she got a FT position at a hospital. She worked there for many years and when she left several years ago, there were LOTS of jobs. She now works at NSLIJ. I have heard it's getting tougher again to find a position so she's very lucky to be there.

Re: Anyone work in nursing at NSLIJ?
Eventually the hospitals will start hiring again, they will have to, there is certainly no patient shortage. I may be wrong but I think the hospitals are going to be looking for BSN as a minimum for new grads from this point on, or the new ADN applicant must be starting a BSN program at the time of application.

Re: Anyone work in nursing at NSLIJ?
Unfortunately its not just nursing. I just graduated as an xray tech & there are no jobs out there. I was able to get an PRN position with the hospital that I did my clinical rotation through & I am very grateful but I have no idea who many hours I will get. The schools are not reducing their enrollment #'s either. Hopefully as the economy picks up so will the positions. Believe it or not patient flow as been less as people have who have no insurance do not come in unless it is a true ER.
