Anyone write a book/published?
Do most people write the book and then try to get it published?
Everyone that i tell my "life story" to says that I should write a book...just wondering if anyone had any experience.

My parents are published writers. My advice is to write for YOU, not in the interest of an audience.

Re: Anyone write a book/published?
my cousin is a "semi-self-published" author.
she wrote a novel and worked with a publishing company that did direct orders. she did pay for some of the process, up front.
i don't know all the details, but she's happy with it and i just helped "edit/proof read" her second novel.
i can ask her for more details, if you would like

Re: Anyone write a book/published?
My mom's friend is an author, and from what I understand, yes - you write the book first, and then try to get it published. The publishers (assuming you're working with a publishing firm rather than going the self-publish route) might still work with you to improve/adjust some parts of your work, but you have to have written material to show them before they'll agree to work with you.

I'm in the process. There are many options nowadays. There are some great books about writing and publishing.

Re: Anyone write a book/published?
From my knowledge, no...you don't write the book first.
The first thing to do is shop for a literary agent and send off what they call a "query letter" to publishers....it outlines what your book is about, who would read it, why there is a market for it, etc.....
most people who try to get published without an agent - their work ends up in the "slush pile."

Re: Anyone write a book/published?
My husband has both self-published and gone through a publishing company.
For his non-self-published book, he sent a query letter and the publisher asked for quite a bit of information (mainly about marketing the book). He didn't write the text until he had signed the contract with the publisher. His was historical in nature and the publisher has a very established set of guidelines for all of their books. As long as you can prove the book will sell, they will publish it. The book did well enough that they wanted him to do additional ones, but he wasn't able to commit to it.

My sorority sister wrote The Devil Wears Prada, and she wrote it before shopping it around (but I do think she had connections). I wouldn't do a vanity press where you need to pay fees to have it published.

Exactly! And if you find a publisher you want to submit to, look on their website for their submission guidelines. When I worked in publishing, the thing we all hated the most was that people never bothered to find out the individual procedures for each house. Some will only take query letters, some will take the first three chapters, some take unsolicited manuscripts but take the time to find out the right way to go for each place. And when sending letters, find the name of the person you are sending to!
Publishing is wild industry with lots of different ways to get published. Good luck!
