Anyone's baby take Cipro antibiotic

DD may have a bladder infection on top of everything else and the urologist prescribed Cipro. I'm concerned because I hated it when I took it for bronchitis and was not able to eat because of the severe nausea. DD isn't drinking enough formula as it is and has decreased wet diapers and diarrhea so I'm nervouse the Cipro will make her drink even less. Anyone have an infant take Cipro? Did DC have decreased appetite? DD is 6 mos lold.Chat Icon

Has she been on anything else already? Or does she have drug allergies?
Cipro usually isn't first line for infants and children.

Re: Anyone's baby take Cipro antibiotic

Cipro is not recommended for use in children unless there are other extenuating circumstances. I personally would not allow my child to take it unless other antibiotics have failed already.

Up until recently, it was never supposed to be used in anybody less than 17 years old, except for the ear and eye drops.

From the Cipro drug information:
Adverse effects, including those related to joints and/or surrounding tissues, are increased in pediatric patients and therefore, ciprofloxacin should not be considered as drug of choice in children (exception is anthrax treatment).

Re: Anyone's baby take Cipro antibiotic

Too much antibiotics! She has been on a small dose of amoxacilian since birth to prevent UTI/bladder infection because of her hydronephrosis. Since the surgery, they have her on Cephalexin for a week and then wanted her to go back on amoxacilian for a few months as a precaution. Now that they think she may have an infection, doc prescribed cipro. She no longer has a fever and is drinking more and making more wet diapers so I'm not going to start the cipro unless I have to. DH and I want to wait until the results of the culture they took today comes back. I definately don't want to start the cipro and then find out she didn't need it afterall. I hate giving her all these antibiotics at such a young age but the docs say the benefits outweigh the risks. Chat Icon

This may be one of those extenuating circumstances I was talking about. I didn't realize that your baby recently had surgery on the kidneys and they now think there may be an infection. In this situation, it may be necessary. You always have to weigh the risks and benefits of any treatment. As the mother, you have the deciding vote though! I hope your little baby gets well soon. p/s - she is just gorgeous!
