DD is 19 months and just got her first ear infection, for which she was prescribed Augmentin. Our pediatrican also advised us to give her probiotics because Augmentin can be pretty tough on their digestive systems, she said.

We started the drug on saturday night. Sunday she gave us a bit of a meltdown before bed - but I figured it was because she wasnt feeling well.

Yesterday we noticed that 15 minutes after she got Augmentin in the evening she went crazy. I mean, literally crazy. I've never in my life seen my child act this way - it was terrifying to watch. DD is normally really calm, happy and affectionate. For an hour she was making this noise I've never heard from her before - it wasnt a cry - it was like the scream/growl of a feral cat - she was throwing things all over the place (never does this), was hitting me in the face when I was holding her (never does this), was running to the door to leave the house - then would run to the stairs - then back to the door - then the stairs, etc. She was flailing and screaming to such a degree that we were about to take her to the ER just because we didnt know what else to do (this had gone on for an hour).

I think she wore herself out after an hour because she finally calmed down to a consistent whimper and let us hold her. She seemed to get better and went to sleep at maybe 8pm (normally asleep at 7 with zero problems). At 11pm she was awake and was screaming and flailing for another hour - then seemed to calm down. By the time I put her to bed again at midnight she was smiling and kissing and hugging us again.

I've left a message for my pediatrician but she doesnt get to her office until 9am. I'm not continuing this medication - but I was wondering if anyone else's child reacted like this.

Chat Icon I swear - DH and I kept saying "this is not our child."
