Anyones DC been diagnosed with Diabetes?
I had GD and possible triggered diabetes 2.
My dd was tested at the hospital right after delivery and she was fine, but so was I. Then 6 weeks pp i was retested and it was #s were high again. So still at almost 7m pp im still being tested. I was wondering since my #s changed since hospital, if i should have my dd tested.
What age did you find out your child had diabetes? How often do peds check childs blood?

Re: Anyones DC been diagnosed with Diabetes?
Juvenile Diabetes runs in my family. DD (23 months) has, thankfully, not been diagnosed. We do moniter her though, and I think it's a good idea if you get your DC's blood tested regulary. We go every 3 months, which may seem like alot, but we want to know that, if God forbid, she gets it, we will know as early as possible so we can start treatment. for you and your little one, that you both remain healthy!
Oh, also...my nephew was diagnosed at 18 months, so even very small children can have it. I am not sure how often the doctor draws blood, but his mom checks his sugar levels with the finger prick machine twice a day.

My dd is going to be 7m old next week, I wonder if thats too early to test, or should i wait until 1 year. Adult diabetes runs in my family, as far as i know no child has had.

Re: Anyones DC been diagnosed with Diabetes?
DW had GD with #2, and I have Juvenile Diabetes, so of course I'm acutely aware of the possibilities. There was a period where DS would go to the bathroom every 30 minutes. A blood test showed he was OK, and it was just a stage he was going through, since he didn't want to wet his pants.
Since I know the other signs, I keep an eye out all the time. I test DW and DC randomly every few months or so, and so far, everyone is OK.

It only takes a few seconds, and a tiny drop of blood. If you are worried, you may want to ask your ped at your next well-visit.

Same here except I had GD with Damien and then it turned into type 2 when he was about 21 months ( well that's when it was diagnosed I am sure I had it longer. So I had diabetes during my pregnancy with Jaidy. Damien is currently doing the pee every 30 minutes and we had him tested and he is fine. (I am glad to know other boys do this too though, we are still a little concerned and that gave me piece of mind so thanks Shawn )
I wouldn't worry about it too much

If you are strong willed enough and have your equipment you can test her yourself. My ped told me it was fine to do this.

Trust me, it hurts you more than it hurts them.... They forget it happened within a minute of sticking them. Luckily, it didn't bother me too much. I've been doing it to myself for over 20 years, so I know what it feels like, so I knew it wouldn't bother DS too much.

I was very nervous when he first started doing the 30 minute thing. After I tested him, and watched all of the other signs, it was obvious that it wasn't diabetes. He never drank that much, wasn't hungry, never complained about things being blurry, etc. That, and he was only potty trained for a few months, and had an accident just before the 30 minute routine. Of course, first reactions are often not very logical and methodical....

Re: Anyones DC been diagnosed with Diabetes?
a good friend's DD was just diagnosed with it at 7 years old at her well visit mom insisted ped test her because she was pee'ing often and lost weight. doc almost didn't want to = luckily she followed her instinct, 2 days later the results were in and the poor kid was rushed to hopsital because #s were so high.
