Anyone's pet ever get an ear hematoma?
We went on vacation for 3 days and I boarded my dog at the vet's office. After we got him home, I bathed him and started to clean his ears and I noticed one ear VERY swollen almost like a blister on the flap of his ear. I brought him to the vet the next day and they said it was a hematoma caused from either excessive scratching or shaking of his ears/head. They said it would go away on its own or they could do surgery. If left alone, he would get "cauliflower" ear. Murphy doesnt take well to surgery because he is allergic to penicillin which we found out when he was neutered. He is not in pain which was a major thing for me.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any advice/experience on all this.
Thank you!

Re: Anyone's pet ever get an ear hematoma?
My Porter had a hematoma on his ear. The vet told us the same thing. Surgery or it can go away on it's own. I decided to give it a few weeks and see what happens. It started getting bigger so we had the surgery done. His ear was wrapped up for a few weeks and he had a cone on his head, but it hasn't grown back and he is fine now. The only reason i chose surgery was because it was getting bigger and it worried me. I would wait and see how it progresses. If it doesn't go away on it's own and gets bigger, I would talk to the vet to see if there are other antibiotics that can be used after surgery.

Thank you. In the last few days it has gotten a little bigger because he wont stop shaking his head. It must feel like something is stuck on his ear. I googled it and someone said they wrapped the dog's head in an ace bandage to keep the ear's weight off... I dont know.

Try the ace bandage thing. Maybe it will work. It definitely has to be uncomfortable for him. I remember Porter scratching at it all the time. Good luck
