AP Twitter account hacked, posts false White House scare

Following a hack attack by an unknown perpetrator, the Associated Press' verified Twitter account posted "an erroneous tweet" claiming that two explosions occurred in the White House and that President Barack Obama is injured. Moments later, the @AP Twitter account — with nearly 2 million followers — was suspended.

Immediately following the false tweet, the Dow Industrial Average lost about 140 points. These losses were immediately recovered. (See chart below.)

"That's a bogus tweet," an AP spokesperson initially told NBC News, a statement that was repeated by the company's corporate communications account. "That's all I have for you right now." Though the initial tweet disappeared, the false message continued to exist on the service in over four thousand retweets.

A wire statement issued later explained that the tweet "came after hackers made repeated attempts to steal the passwords of AP journalists."

NBC News has reached out to Twitter for additional comment.

Social media accounts associated with CBS News programs "60 Minutes" and "48 Hours" were compromised on Saturday. It is not clear if Tuesday's hack attack is related to Saturday's.

AP Twitter account hacked, posts false White House scare

thats scary that a tweet could affect the Dow that quickly... that people didnt check to see if it was reported anywhere else... the first thing i do is check other news places... and the last thing on my mind would have been the stock market.

Wow, luckily everything is OK.

I just had to chuckle at the AP's quote: "That's a bogus tweet" Chat Icon

Ten years ago, maybe even less like five years ago, we would have been like tweet, twit, what?!! Chat Icon

It's just crazy how we use this seemingly ridiculous terminology in such a serious manner!

I use it to get up to the minute information on certain things. Like I follow a lot of hockey related accounts such as bloggers and news outlets so if I'm not home to watch the game, I can get pretty much a play by play by checking my twitter feed.

I RT tweets I like, things I agree with. I prefer FB but I like Twitter to get up to the minute info.

I can see following, but the things people post are ridiculous to me. It's like posting inane facebook statuses without all the fun pictures to look at.

Nobody cares that you ate a sandwich or are at the gym or are going to bed or just waking up or missed your train or need new shoes or you're mad at Taco Bell. Chat Icon

Just kidding, I'd want to know why you're mad at Taco Bell.

ETA: Of course, I mean the proverbial you, not YOU in particular.

Luckily the people I follow don't post anything as mundane as that. I follow Anonymous, FBI, NYPD, celebrities, hockey players, political sites and some politicians, media, some blogs... stuff like that.
