Apartment VENT!
not that I like my apartment- we actually hate it- but since we are planning on moving OOS- in Oct of 2008
we thought we would suck it up for another year- we spent a lot of money moving in- real estate fee - about 1.5 months rent moving in fee- $175 Movers- $1300
but they are selling our unit- it's a co-op building- but they have a bunch on rentals in the building- all being sold
so now in less then 6 months I have to move all over again- I refuse to pay another brokers fee
there is always the building across the street where we park- but for the money - it's not worth it- they didn't have heat for 2 weeks and no elevator serivce!
so now I have to find a place, with parking and that takes cats
in Queens still I guess- I want to

Oh Beth, that stinks! Can you try to find an apartment on your own so you don't have to pay a brokers fee?

Re: Apartment VENT!
That stinks! Can you look in papers for an apartment? We had 2 before the house and both were in a Yankee Trader or such.

Re: Apartment VENT!
ugh...that stinks - finding a place that has parking is going to be hard
Unless you look on craigslist and live in a residential area in a house apt and park on the street

Re: Apartment VENT!
I am totally doing it myself this time- there is no way I am paying a fee
I think it might be better to rent a house- or part of a house-
once I add my rent plus parking I am paying a lot of money- so I have a decent budget
and I have about 5 months- so I don't have to panic- I am just glad I found out early
I really feel bad for the older people who have been renting in the building since it opened- they are not paying anywhere near market value for the apartment- so they are screwed
everything in my apartment is orginal- (bathroom and kitchen) good luck selling it in this market!

Re: Apartment VENT!
Have you thought about Forest Hills? There are a ton of houses around there that have driveways. That might solve your parking situation.

Re: Apartment VENT!
I was going to suggest our apartment (we'll be moving out in June), but she wouldn't let us have pets. We found our apartment through the Pennysaver, and it's been great! Hope that helps a little...

Re: Apartment VENT!
You can also try Douglaston or Little Neck so you are still very close to the Cross Island. But there are so many places in Bayside, I am sure you may be able to find something.

Re: Apartment VENT!
I lived in Douglaston and for some reason I still get the Little Neck/Bayside Ledger newspaper. I was just paging through it and noticed alot of houses for rent in Bayside. The prices seemed resonable as well. See if you can find a copy of that paper by you so you can get some ideas.

Re: Apartment VENT!
if the person who is buying it is buying several, its preobably that persons intention to rent too. So if you are a good tenant, maybe the new owner would agree to rent to you also.

the rental ones are thru the building- not a private owner
they frown upon that in this building
I think our best bet is too look for a small house or 2 family house with a driveway
but I will miss the gym and the pool!

of course there is a list a mile long for it- but I added my name to it
I bet they would let us out of the lease- then they can sell early
but I doubt I wil get this one- even though it's perfect!

Re: Apartment VENT!
I just called the managment company to confirm the rumors
I am not going to waste more money till I have too
and I really don't want to move out early- b/c then I really not re-couping the money I have laided out already
if I moved out May 1- then I would need to be ready to move OOS next may 1st
which I wont be- we are aiming for Oct
I want to stick to my orginal timeline
but I will be using craigs list- and not a real estate agent this time-

Re: Apartment VENT!
It's hard to say, but if they are just beginning to sell them, they may not sell quickly at all. Or do they want everyone out by a certain date?
That really does stink! I hope you can find something decent in the meantime. If we didn't have a co-op, I would suggest that you rent ours short-term when we move out in June, but we would need to get you approved by the board, etc. Too much rigamarole for a few months!

they aren't kicking people out- just not renewing leases
most renters are renting below market value- not me-
if you want my opinion- they came late to this party- all of the rentals are orginal- need to be gutted - and with the market falling- I can see these sitting for a while
I have 6 months left on my lease- I wanted to sign for 1 more year- but I will just find a cheaper place- and bank more money for the house
the more I think about- the less annoyed I get
I haven't even been offical told anything yet

Re: Apartment VENT!
That does stink after everything you paid to get in there. Are these sponsor-owned apartments? The ppl who have been there forever are probably rent controlled or rent stabilized and protected under the law.

they are owned by the people who built the building- they kept some units for them selves
they are rent stablized or rent controled- the people that have been there for ever are freaking out
we talked about it last night- and we are happy to go- we are going to move into a less expensive apartment- part of a house- where we can park
I pay over $2K to live there with parking- and we think we can find something for under $1500- leaving us with an extra $5- 6K to take with us when we go
so I am actually happy this is happening now- otherwise we would have just resigned- with a rent increase I'm sure
and since they have over $4K of my money in deposits- I can get that back and earn interest on it- and have to lay out less for the new cheaper apartment- that might only need 1 month sercurity
