That's going just a bit too far! There are so many things that are allowed on planes again, including small pocketknives. I can't picture jewelry being a safety hazard. I understand that she needs to be checked, since the wand just shows that *something* is there, but the woman even said she was willing to get checked by a female attendant, so she wasn't being obstinate or anything.
Am I never allowed to fly again until I lose 10 or 20 pounds and can get my wedding ring off my finger again?
I think there needs to be more training in the letter of the law versus the spirit of the law......

I have been through many metal detectors and none of my piercings regardless of location have ever set off the wand. AND she offered the information that she had a piercing...its not like she tried to hide it. And none of the piercings are sharp, so why would they make the passenger remove it? Are other passengers with stud earring required to remove them?
This sounds like such a load.

I had a nipple ring and I don't think I had a problem at airport security.
BUT seriously I don't get it. She was embarrased and humiliated but now she is on the news showing her face telling everyone about her nipple ring.

ITA. Never once have I set off a metal detector. I served jury duty with pierced nips.

Very valid point! I don't get it either. I didn't know that body piercings set off the detectors.

Is that what they said? It's ok to harass people? This was wrong but do you realize how many passengers they see everyday? It's a thankless job that most of us would not want but we couldn't be at least semi-safe without them.

trust me, i know all about the TSA - my DH used to work for them. search youtube for the "TSA gangstas" video - that's definitely a pretty accurate depiction of what their job entails 
and i think it was pretty obvious that the title of my post was partially sarcastic. thanks though.

horrendous. I don't care what their policies are, this was over and above their procedures.
If they don't apologize, they will have a lot more crap to deal with going forward.
They did nothing wrong my butt!
She was already humilated, why not go public so no one else has to go through it.
that female inspector needs a lesson in judgment. If any one of the male inspectors had a penis ring and were asking to remove it with a pair of pliers this would be bigger news.
