Appt next week...re: heartbeat

Hi ladies:

DH and I heard/saw the heartbeat at 6w5d (internal sono) and we're going back next week at 9w2d. I was told I wasn't having a sonogram at this appt though-can the heartbeat be picked up externally at 9w2d??

They can try to pick it up externally I guess.

With DS they did it at 11 weeks and told me that if they didn't hear it, not to be worried. We heard it fine.

With this DC, I went at 12 weeks, and the doctor said he wasn't even going to try bc he wouldn't hear the heartbeat.

My RE never tried to hear the HB... (we were released at 10 weeks) and my ob/gyn didn't use the doppler until 12 weeks - so I'm not sure!

Thanks for the replies. If they try and don't hear it, do you think they'll do an internal? I know every office is different, I'm just freaking out early b/c well-that's my nature these days!

My Dr. couldn't get the heartbeat with the doppler, so she did a quick external ultrasound to make sure she could see the HB

At my 10 week appt. the dr. tried to hear the heartbeat with the doppler and couldn't so she did an external ultra sound and we heard it loud and clear.

Most doctors wont even try at that stage. I have the same doppler the drs the use at home and it was BARELY recognizable at around 10 weeks.

I had internals up until my 10 wk appt... then they picked up the HB with the doppler.

If they can't pick it up with a doppler, just tell them you want an internal... you're paying them - so there shouldn't be a problem.

I had internals up until my 12 week appt when they used the doppler and heard the HB loud and clear!

With my 1st DD the NP went to listen to the HB at 11 weeks and said do not be surprised if we didn't hear it b/c it was very early to hear it from the outside. I'm not sure if they'll even try to hear it at 9w.

i have my 10wk tomorrow and if they can't do the doppler i will ask for a sono to make sure all is well...especially since we plan on telling our families next week on thanksgiving

That is exactly why I'm asking. We plan on telling the families on Thanksgiving as well, and the dr. told me to come in right before Thanksgiving so we can tell them with 100% confidence. I won't be too confident if they try to hear it and don't.
My DH keeps telling me to not freak out about things unless there is a clear reason to freak out. Maybe I should start listening to him?? Naaah.

My doctor tried to hear the heartbeat with the doppler at my 12 week appt. and she couldn't find it. She said it was too early and told me not to worry but I was so nervous until my NT scan which was the week after.
If they can do a sono have them do it!
