APRIL FOOLS DAY! GET READY! FAUX FOOD RECIPES-LONG POST
Grilled Cheese
by Cindy A. Littlefield An April Fools' recipe from FamilyFun magazine You won't have to say "cheese" to make your kids smile once they sample this lunch look-alike. INGREDIENTS: Pound cake (we used Entenmann's brand) 1 cup buttercream or white frosting (canned is just fine) Yellow and red food coloring
Cut the pound cake into bread-like slices and toast them in a toaster oven just until they turn golden brown. Once they've cooled for a few minutes, stack two slices for each sandwich and cut the stack in half diagonally (slicing the sandwich before you fill it makes for fewer crumbs).
Now tint the frosting by stirring in a few drops of yellow and red food coloring (more yellow than red) to get a shade of orange that resembles American cheese.
Carefully spread frosting between the slices of each half sandwich. If you mound the frosting on one slice, then top it with the other and gently press down, the frosting will ooze out a bit and look all the more like melted cheese. Makes one sandwich. ******************************** mock sushi
1/4 cup butter 4 cups mini marshmallows 6 cups crisped rice cereal 20 to 25 gummy worms 1 to 2 boxes of fruit leather 12- by 17-inch baking sheet 2-quart saucepan
Step 1 Grease a 12- by 17-inch baking pan.
Step 2 Melt butter in a 2-quart saucepan over medium heat.
Step 3 Add the marshmallows and stir until smooth.
Step 4 Remove mixture from heat and stir in the rice cereal until it's evenly coated.
Step 5 Turn the baking sheet so that the shorter ends are at the top and bottom. Then press the marshmallow mixture on the sheet, distributing it evenly.
Step 6 Starting at one side and 1 inch up from the lower edge, place gummy worms atop the mixture end to end in a horizontal line.
Step 7 Gently roll the lower edge of the marshmallow mixture over the gummy worms.
Step 8 Then stop and cut the log away from the rest of the mixture. Use the same method for 4 more logs.
Step 9 Slice each log in 1-inch-thick "sushi" rolls and wrap them individually with a strip of fruit leather. More April Fools' Food Pranks ********************* Fauxberry Pie
At first glance, a slice of this pie appears to offer something sweet: chocolate filling topped with strawberry whipped cream. But unsuspecting diners are in for a surprise.... It's really a shepherd's pie in disguise! Cocoa, molasses, and barbecue sauce give the meat its chocolaty color, while whipped potatoes infused with beet juice complete the deception. The best part of the prank is that you're also making dinner! "Chocolate" Meat Loaf Filling 1/3 cup barbecue sauce 1/4 cup milk 1 tablespoon dark, unsulfured molasses 1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa 1/2 teaspoon chili powder 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 tablespoon canola oil 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon celery salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 2/3 cup bread crumbs 1 1/4 pounds lean ground beef 1 egg, lightly beaten "Strawberry" Potato Topping 2 pounds baking potatoes, peeled and cubed Salt 1/2 cup canned sliced beets (not pickled) 1/4 cup (or more) warm milk 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces Piecrust Frozen pie shell (use your favorite brand) Or use our Foolproof Pie Shell recipe)
Step 1 Heat the oven to 350°. In a small saucepan, combine the barbecue sauce, milk, molasses, cocoa, and chili powder. Set the pan over medium heat and whisk the mixture until it is lukewarm and the cocoa is completely dissolved. Set it aside to cool.
Step 2 Sauté the onions in the tablespoon of canola oil until they are transparent, about 7 minutes.
Step 3 In a large bowl, whisk together the salt, celery salt, pepper, and bread crumbs. Then add the beef, egg, sauce mixture, and onion. Thoroughly mix the ingredients using your hands or a wooden spoon.
Step 4 Remove the pie shell from the freezer. (We placed ours in a Pyrex dish to help ensure that the pie would bake evenly.) Transfer the meat to the shell, spreading it evenly with a spoon. Bake it until the meat is cooked through, about 60 minutes.
Step 5 While the pie is baking, prepare the mashed potato topping. Place the potatoes in a large saucepan and add enough water to completely submerge them. Salt the water lightly, cover the pot, and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat slightly and cook the potatoes at a low boil until they are tender, about 12 minutes.
Step 6 While the potatoes cook, puree the beets and 1/4 cup warm milk in a blender until only small bits of beet are left in the mixture. Set aside.
Step 7 Drain the potatoes and transfer them to a large mixing bowl. Add the butter and pureed beets and, using an electric mixer, whip the mixture until it's smooth and fluffy. Add more milk if needed and salt to taste.
Step 8 Spread the whipped potatoes over the top of the cooked meat pie with a spatula, as you would whipped cream, mounding it slightly in the center. Slice and serve the pie while the potatoes are still hot. Makes 8 servings. **************************** Colorful Cupcakes
The first surprise here: there's not a grain of sugar in these cupcakes. The second surprise: your kids will love them anyway. Meat Loaf 1 pound lean ground beef 1/2 cup seasoned bread crumbs 1 cup grated Monterey Jack cheese 3 tablespoons ketchup 1 egg 1/2 teaspoon celery salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper Potato Frosting 3 cups mashed potatoes Food coloring
Step 1 Heat the oven to 375 degrees. Line 12 muffin tin cups with foil bake cups.
Step 2 In a large bowl, mix together all of the meat loaf ingredients until well combined. Divide the mixture evenly among the lined cups (the liners should be about three quarters full).
Step 3 Place the filled muffin tins on cookie sheets and bake the cupcakes for about 15 minutes or until cooked through.
Step 4 Divide the mashed potatoes among three small bowls and stir a few drops of food coloring into each batch to create blue, yellow, and pink pastel frostings. Spread a generous dollop on each cupcake. Makes 12 cupcakes. More April Fools' Food Pranks ******************************** Fool's Dinner
Do your kids balk when it comes to eating their peas and carrots? With this meal, they're in for a sweet surprise.
Watch a step-by-step video demonstration of this prank. Peanut butter log candy Peas-and-carrots candy mix Vanilla ice cream Caramel or butterscotch topping
Step 1 On each dinner plate, arrange four or five peanut butter logs (to look like chicken nuggets) and a small handful of the candy mix (for vegetables).
Step 2 Right before serving, add a scoop of vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt to each plate for "mashed potatoes." Top with gravy -- a spoonful of caramel sauce or butterscotch topping. More April Fools' Food Pranks *************************** Faux French Fries
This April Fools' Day, pull a fast one (or better yet, a fast-food one!) on your kids by replacing a classic salty snack with a little something sweet: sugary fake fries. 1 package of plain, prepared breadstick dough Kitchen scissors Sugar White envelope Seedless strawberry jam
Step 1 Begin by unrolling the dough and separating the breadsticks. Use kitchen scissors to cut them into 1/4-inch-wide sticks.
Step 2 Roll all the sticks in sugar, then bake them on a cookie sheet according to the package directions or until golden brown (ours took about 8 minutes). Leave them on the tray until they're cool.
Step 3 Make this mix-up even more fun by putting the fries in a fast-food fry sleeve (the cutoff end of a sealed envelope; ours was 2 1/2 inches deep) and serving them with a side of "ketchup" (jam whisked with a fork to a smooth consistency).
HAVE FUN! IF ANY ADDITIONAL RECIPES ARE NEED SHOUT OUT! THIS IS THE 4TH TIME I WROTE THIS AND THEN GOT BUMPED! I am going to slam my head into a wall now... Make sure to pick up older kids in your pajamas looking like a mess with two diff shoes--of course with a full tank of gas... I will post easy pranks--i want to post this before I lose it again.
