Re: Aquariums - spinoff to the Feng Shui post

My husband LOVES aquariaums and we have one.
He has freshwater. Salt water requires a little bit more work and setup but the fishes are more colorful.
Pricing also depends on how big the tank is and also if fishes are freshwater/saltwater...I think saltwater needs more equipment to be set up or more filters..etc

My DH LOVES saltwater aquariums and wants one pretty bad.

It's funny because I read the Feng Shui post and we believe the opposite - anything from the ocean in the house is bad luck. Especially fish tanks.

But I have told DH that I am perfectly willing to throw superstition to the wind and he can get a tank...but the second we have bad luck - it's going out! Chat Icon

I've never heard of this..that's pretty interesting....is bad luck to keep something from the ocean? This is according to what religion or which practice?

I am not an expert so I could be wrong, but Feng Shui you go by the 4 elements, and one of them is water, and all needs to be balanced... acturally the word SHUI means water Chat Icon

We have a 65-75? gallon salt water tank in our living room. It's VERY expensive and my DH has spent a ton of money replacing expensive fish. It's nice to look at though...very relaxing and Jared loves it too.Chat Icon

We have an 80 gallon freshwater tank with tropical fish. The tank itself is made of wood - it's nice , it blends well into our living room. It was about $300. The fish we get are around $10 each but they live pretty long. Once in a while we will get something exotic for around $40.

Saltwater tanks are harder to manage because of balancing the pH.

We have a 55 gallon freshwater tank. DH has had to scale down since we were married. He went from 3 tanks to 1. Had had to have his red devil in solitary confinement because it was killing all of the fish & he didn't want to get rid of it, so he bought another tank. We've had our tank for ages so whatever the set up was won't be applicable right now. I do know that he had to buy a new filter every year because the Fluval (sp?) filter/pump thing would break.

We have salt water fish for years now and the upkeep is a lot but well worth it. We had a 10, 20, 30 and 90 gallon set up but now just have a 30 gallon and nearly done with a 450 gallon DH built Chat Icon

Wow! You've all got HUGE tanks!
Ummm...We've got a 20 gallon...Chat Icon Freshwater and filled with beautiful Goldfish. I'd love to venture out and do the saltwater fish, but we're holding off until we get a house.
If you've never had a fish I would recommend starting out with Goldfish. Rumors are not true about them dying off in a month. We've had a few of them for about 5 years or more. It's a good way to start out.
Good luck!

These are the fish my my husband enjoys and breeds. He even belongs to a couple of aquarium societies here in NJ. The 75 gal tank we just got has silver/black angel fish and some other type of fresh water fish he wants to try to breed.

We have a 125 gallon tank with african cichlids. It was a bit expensive to set up and get running, but now that all of the kinks have been worked out it is really easy to maintain.

Saltwater tanks require more upkeep b/c in addition to PH and amonia, ect. you need to worry about the salinity. But once you get everything running smoothly it is not too bad.

Where you will notice the biggest difference is in the price of fish. Generally, saltwater fish are much more expensive than freshwater.

my husband has salt water aquarium... it can get pretty expensive.. I would say that if you get a bigger aquarium it could run you 500-1000 easily...
