Architect Estimates- free or how much?
We would like to know how much architects charge for an ESTIMATE. (not the actual job)
Does anyone have any prices of estimates they would like to share?
TIA

any Architect I've ever worked with charges, seeing they usually come up with some plans. the price range varies depending on the job and how much time it takes them to get you an actual estimate. A lot of them will credit you the cost though if you hire them.

thanks, but just wondering if you have any idea on how much (ball park) an estimate is.
Essentially we are gutting our ranch and adding a second level, and adding a garage.

We paid 4,000 and that included up to 3 drawings. We used only 2.

thank you for responding, actually we have 2 architects and we know what their prices are for the actual job- but we want to get estimates off of them before we book with one- and were wondering how much the estimates are.

Do you mean estimates for the actual WORK to be done after the architect does the drawings? Only a contractor or a construction cost estimator can give you that estimate - and if he has drawings, their estimate will be more accurate.
An architect's fees will also depend on whether you go to a licensed architect or one that is not licensed. A licensed architect will be much more $$ (around $4,000) than an unlicensed one (probably $2,500). The advantage of having an unlicensed architect do your drawings is that you will save money, and your drawings will then be looked over by a licensed architect because he has to sign those drawings in order for them to be submitted to the town for approval.
(I work for an architecture firm.)

Re: Architect Estimates- free or how much?
When we were looking at architects all of the estimates were free. We are having a whole house designed so we had gotten estimates from 10,000-13,000 that included everything even applying for the permits from the town.

I am an architect, an honestly you should be able to review the scope of a project for free. Once a scope of a project is realize, then a price can be negotiated. It is very difficult to just give a price as situations vary alot. I would call up a few architects and see if they offer a free consultation. Most should.
