are any of your spouses on anti-anxiety meds?
Dh has been on a combo of Prozac and Klonapin for over a year now for anxiety issues. They have helped him immensely mood wise. But with our fertility issues I've often wondered if it has had an adverse effect on his swimmers. He already has had sexual side effects in that it takes a long time for him to finish. Prozac is often prescribed for men with pre-mature ejaculation issues.
Even though his SA's check out with great results, I've been finding articles that SSRI's (like Prozac and more specifically Paxil) cause much higher rates of DnA fragmentation in sperm. like over 30% Even when regular SA analysis shows good results.
im freaking the **** out right about now. B/c all along everyone has said its my "advanced maternal age" and possible egg quality. and maybe thats true. but I cant help but wonder if his medications are going to royally screw me in the end.

Has he seen a urologist? Ones specializing in MFI will likely have some insight.

My DH is on meds, his SA was terrible before he went on them and he needed them desperately so when we saw the MFI specialist we talked to him about it and he assured us that it wouldn't be an issue. He just had a TESE done 2 weeks ago and on Wednesday we go to find out all of the results. If you need a wonderful MFI Specialist I suggest Dr. Gilbert at the Smith Institute of Urology in New Hyde Park. He really is a genuinely caring doctor who never rushes you and is extremely thorough.

we have not b/c everyone keeps telling us there are no issues with DH's sperm. has very high counts, motility, etc.
I asked my DH to talk to his neurologist who prescribes these medications and see what he says.

For peace of mind; why don't you have him take a DNA Fragmentation test? Not all doctors prescribe it. But Reprosource is the lab that its done with. A doctor just has to call in the script for you. Your DH can do this all at home. They deliver you the kit; along with dry ice. And they come pick up too when he is done. The report may take about a good 2+ weeks.
Just because his SA tests come back normal does not mean anything. This looks for the basics. If you have time, I would try and do this before your next IVF cycle.
The DNA test actually looks specifically at the DNA of the sperm.

DH called his neurologist and the dr. said there is no concrete evidence the meds cause this. RMA told me the same thing this morning.
I will look into this test though b/c i just have this feeling something else may be up.

Prozac and klonopin are not known to cause fertility issues in men. Many of my residents are prescribed these medications and while most aren't sexually active, it is my responsibility to research the drugs and monitor side effects. Any research I have come across do not have any fertility side effects of significant value. However, that's not to say it's non existent. Most recent studies show klonopin affecting overall fertility at 0.0128% which is not enough to be considered significant. Prozac is shown to decrease libido and sperm count in men which you say is not an issue. The anxiety/ stress/ possible depression can contribute to fertility issues however studies vary so widely. I would do as HopelesslyDiscouraged suggested and complete the DNA analysis. It also doesn't hurt to follow up with the prescriber of medication to see their thoughts, they will likely have read up on more studies than I have. FM if you have any questions! Best of luck!

The studies I read online were mostly for the medication Paxil. but didnt really rule out SSRI's in general. Dh did speak to his neurologist today who prescribes the meds for him and said there isnt concrete evidence for fragmentation. I think there was one or two studies these articles were referencing, but im sure more research is needed.

I absolutely agree. I've seen tremendous improvement with DH being on them. I was so stressed out during the first IVF for many reasons unrelated to it (my aunt passed away, customers, work, etc). Im really trying to not give a shit about anything the 2nd time..lol.
both of our dr's feel the same..that there is no conclusive evidence.
