Are bassinets a waste?

I registered for two bassinets for my Chat Icon Chat Icon and I'm hearing lately that a lot of babies don't like them. My DH and I were wondering if we should return them and get two swings and/or two FP Rock Sleepers. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Chat Icon

Re: Are bassinets a waste?

I may not be the norm but DD slept in a bassinet for the first three months at night...I'm not a big believer in them sleeping in the rockers etc...During the day she slept/napped in them, the rocker, swing etc.. but not at night..

Re: Are bassinets a waste?

for us......not at all. It was fantastic for middle of the night feedings when I nursed the first three months. Just rolled over, grabbed DS and nursed. If he was having trouble falling asleep it was nice to be able to just lean over and rock him in the bassinet, all as opposed to getting out of bed. Plus I just wasnt ready to have him away from me, and all alone in his bedroom. I will definitely be using one again with this one.

Don't laugh - DD turned 6 mths and is still in hers. I just don't want this phase to end. With that said, she is moving to her crib tomorrow night. I loved having the bassinet with both my kids and used it a lot.

Re: Are bassinets a waste?

The fisher price sleepers seem to be all the rage these days.

I registered for one and I'm hoping to get it.. if not I will just buy it myself.

My friend has a 5 week old right now... she has BOTH a bassinet and and the FP sleeper... she tried the bassinet first... he would NOT sleep in it for ANYTHING. But he sleeps like a charm in the FP sleeper. For her, the bassinet was a waste and it takes up more room in her already cramped apt than the FP sleeper does.

Re: Are bassinets a waste?

At 4 1/2 months, DD is still sleeping in the FP newborn rock n play sleeper every single nap/night/etc. It's wonderful. Tonight she was so so so tired (ped told us to start cutting out any nap after 4 pm, so she was up for almost 4 hours, whereas she usually naps after 2-2 1/2 hours awake) and I rocked her for literally 10 seconds and she fell right asleep. The angle is so perfect and it's so convenient for travel and everything.

I love mine so much, I gave our friend one for her shower present a few weeks ago. Chat Icon

ETA: the FP rock n play sleeper is not a traditional rocker. It's actually safety rated and tested/approved for night time sleeping. So, really, it's akin to a bassinet as far as that goes.

Re: Are bassinets a waste?

My DD slept in hers until she was 4 months old. In the very beginning she slept in her bouncer, but by the time she was 1 1/2 months, she was in the bassinet.

DD slept in hers until 3 months when we moved her to her crib. I still put her in it to switch things up during the day because it has a mobile. she does not sleep in it anymore.

Re: Are bassinets a waste?

I didnt have a bassinet for DD..she slept in the pack and play in our room but I am thinking of getting a real bassinet for this baby. I just think they look more comfortable than the PnP.

Re: Are bassinets a waste?

DD didn't like the bassinett the 1st 2 weeks - but then she/I loved it - and I kept her in it for 5 months! Basically until she grew out of it....

I say it was worth it!

I agree. The basinet is well worth it in my opinion especially while BF. DD loves hers!

Same here. DD is 4 wks and hates the bassinet. I've tried so many times to get her to sleep in it and she won't, but the Rock and Play she loves!

Re: Are bassinets a waste?

We were on the fence about registering for a bassinet.....but we did! We also registered for the FP rocker. Last night we went to a baby class and the instructor had a good point about starting good sleeping habits - hopefully it works. But she said from the day your bring the baby home have them sleep in one location at night in the dark obviously (ex bassinet in the your bedroom) and then during the day in another location but not the bassinet (ex FP rocker) in a bright room with everyday noises like the TV and phone etc. to get them to understand day and night and separate the 2....just thought this might help. We're going to give it a try.

Re: Are bassinets a waste?

I plan on having a bassinet in my den which is on my first floor for napping and then at night I plan on having the baby sleep in his or her room in the crib upstairs.

Re: Are bassinets a waste?

My DD was in our room, in her bassinett for a few months. It is definitely worth it! I checked on her and stared at her every 5 minutes the first few weeks, to make sure she was OK! The middle of the night feeding was easier with her right there too!

Re: Are bassinets a waste?

we used the bassinet attachment on the PnP (in our room) for 2.5 mos, until DS1 was STTN. We then moved him into his crib. I never let him sleep in a swing/rocker/bouncer - didn't want to start any bad habits. Now he's almost 2 and he'd sleep on a tile floor if he was tired enough. Chat Icon

Re: Are bassinets a waste?

for my son we used the bassinet attachment on the pack and play which worked great except for him beign a loud sleeper so we moved him to his own room at 2 weeks but i still kept himin the bassinet part of the pack and play because it was easier to pick him up and we had not gotten his crib yet

for my twins - i am gettingt he twin pack and play this way they can sleep together - it has a netting that separates them so that there is not a sids risk - then i have the pack and play when we travel

Not a waste at all!!
DS was in his (in our room) until he was 3.5 months. If I could have kept him in it longer, I would have but he outgrew it.

Re: Are bassinets a waste?

It was a waste for us. DS slept in the FP little lamb swing right next to my bed until he was 8 months old and then we transitioned him to the crib.

I am going to get the FP newborn rocker for this one and see if they like that or the swing. Every kid is different.

Re: Are bassinets a waste?

nope i dont think theyre a waste. i love using a bassinett because i can leave it right next to my bed. when they get bigger and in their own room in the crib, you have to constantly get up if you want to check on them
my first was in hers till 4months
