Are bunk beds unsafe?

We need to re-do my daughters' room and we are doing a shabby chic theme with a chandelier and white washed wood, but I need to find a bed set for 2 beds and all I can think of is bunk beds, but they scare me, any ideas? thanksChat Icon

Re: Are bunk beds unsafe?

There are safety regulations for bunk beds, but that doesn't mean they are always safe...

Do not let a child younger than 6 sleep on the top bunk

Make sure there is a safetly rail on the top bunk

Use a bunk mattress for the top bunk to ensure that there is enough height from the top of the mattress to the top of the safety rail for it to work properly

Just off the top of my head...

Re: Are bunk beds unsafe?

I had bunk beds unti I was in high school. I was the top bunk as the oldest. Make sure there is a guard rail to stop rolling children. Also, you need to set rules for the ladder. We were only allowed one at a time on the ladder. It can be dangerous (one time, I knocked my sister off because she was climbing up behind me). Also, make rules about friends being allowed on the bunk (too many kids on it can also be a problem).

Other than that, it was fine. I grew up and didn't get hurt!

Re: Are bunk beds unsafe?

my friend and her sister had those 1980s metal bunk beds.

Her sister was playing on the top bunk, I was laying on the bottom.

Her stupid sister decided to start rocking the beds...i started to hear "crackling" noises so I get up, and as I turn around the bunk beds collapsed!!

Please be careful...I dont think they would have collapsed if their mother would have taken care of them, they were probably old and not maintained properly.

my sister just ordered bunk beds for her 3 1/2 yr old son's room. if you haven't decided on one yet, go to just for the home in the village. it is next to the gym and across from jonathans. a little pricey but the furniture lines they carry are VERY well made and sturdy. they have a ton of books to look through and offer a wide selection. only downside is that it sometimes takes a while for items to be delivered (6-10 wekks).

hope all is well and tell hubby i said hello!

Re: Are bunk beds unsafe?

We had them when I was young. My brother fell out of the top bunk at least once. He was fine, but still, could be dangerous.

The other thing I never thought of, and we were discussing it with my cousin a few weeks ago- he's a volunteer fireman and said that bunk beds are the worst thing. Smoke rises, so if ever there was a fire, the child on the top bunk could be in more danger.

Re: Are bunk beds unsafe?

My sister and I had bunk beds growing up....the only thing I didn't like about them was the fact that my sister would get up in the middle of the night and spit on me....but I guess she could have done that with any beds.....

Oh, and we had a fire in our bedroom once (small one) and because my sister was on the bottom, she was able to smell it and get us all to safety.

Re: Are bunk beds unsafe?

The only thing I heard was like Lisa mentioned was that they suggest not putting a child on the top bunk till they are 6. Guard rails of course. Im eventually getting bunk beds for my boys to share a room. I would go with the most well made set you can afford. This way you know its as sturdy as possible.

I'm sorry, I know it's not really funny, but I'm LMAO! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Why would she do that? Chat Icon

I had bunk beds when I was younger and I do remember my sister falling off the top bunk once. We used to trade off who would have the top & bottom bunk. But looking back, the rails on our bed were really unsafe. There was a big gap between the mattres & the rail and the rail was also removable so it could move if you pushed up on it. I'm sure these days they are made to be much safer. I nvever heard of a bunk mattress, but I'm sure that would make it safer.

It is pretty funny! Chat Icon now at least!
She denies ever doing it....but I still remember the creaking of the lower bunk as she'd try to sneak up on me!
Not quite sure why she did it though.....maybe because she was older and it was her job to torture me......

Re: Are bunk beds unsafe?

we have triple bunks (Yes triple) for over a year now and the kids have loved them. no problems and you just need to set up strict guidelines like no jumping off or on the beds and no playing on the top bunk..strictly for sleep.Chat Icon

Re: Are bunk beds unsafe?

We had bunk beds....and we fell out of them plenty of times but all in all it was OK. I think a lot of it has to do with the rules that you set, and making sure that the younger ones aren't on the top bunk.

I'd be cautious with a chandalier and a bunkbed though, IMO. Yikes! Unless of course it is a big room and they wouldn't be anywhere near eachother.

This sounds like something I would do as the youngest!!! LOL

In all seriousness, my niece has one (her stuffed animals are on top) and it always scares me when she shows me the animals, because the ceiling fan is so close! So I would say, no ceiling fan!
